20. How Rip Currents Form (C104 5)

Ocean waves flow over the sand spit and toward the beach. But water from the waves can’t flow back over the sand spit. The water piles up, trapped by the sand spit, until a small break opens up in the sand spit. The water then flows rapidly out through the opening, producing a strong current.
