LANGUAGE ARTS

7th GRADE

Ms. Kain

WHAT IS LANGUAGE ARTS?

Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines language arts as: the subjects (such as reading, spelling, literature, and composition) that aim at developing the student’s comprehension and capacity for use of written and oral language.

HOW YOU WILL BE GRADED?

You will receive two letter grades from this class.  One is for writing and the other is for reading.  Grading will be based on a points scale.  Homework will range in points anywhere from 5-20 points, quizzes will be worth about 30 points, and tests will be worth about 60 points.

Any homework assigned will be due the next day unless otherwise specified.  Late homework will only be accepted within 24 hours from the time it was due.  You will not receive full credit for that late assignment.  If it is turned in within 24 hours, you will be docked 10% on your grade.  I will not accept any late assignments after the 24 hours, this means that you will receive a zero.  I do realize that there may be exceptions to this rule, if you have a problem, PLEASE come talk to me.

GRADING SCALE

100% - 90% = A

  89% - 80% = B

  79% - 70% = C

  69% - 60% = D

  59% -   0% = F

RULES AND DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

All school rules will apply in my classroom.  All of the school rules can be found in your agenda.  All discipline procedures will also be followed as they are stated in your agenda.  There will also be set classroom rules that will be generated by you the students.

LEAVING THE CLASSROOM

You should use the restroom before entering the classroom.  You will only be allowed to use the restroom during class if it is an emergency situation.  If you need to leave the classroom for any other reason and it is approved by me you then MUST have your agenda and a pass MUST be filled out by me.

WHAT DO I BRING TO CLASS?

You will ALWAYS need to bring paper, a writing utensil, your agenda, a language arts folder/binder, and a book to read.  You will keep your journal in the classroom.  Any other supplies you will need for the day will be listed on the whiteboard outside the classroom.  You will NOT be allowed to leave the room to get supplies.  Always come prepared for class.  This is part of learning to be responsible.

WHAT IF I AM ABSENT?

If you are absent from my class at any time you should check the “Homework Binder.”  This binder will have what we did in class and any handouts or assignments you will need to complete.  If you have any questions please ask a classmate or Ms. Kain.  Please remember this is YOUR responsibility to get what you missed.

A DAY IN LANGUAGE ARTS…

Everyday is different.  The following is an example of what could happen…

When entering the classroom you will have directions to complete “Bell Work” on the board, overhead, or a small activity to complete.  There should be NO talking during this time unless the activity permits.  Next you will receive directions or instruction from Ms. Kain.  Then you have a group or independent activity.  Last we will review what we did for the day, assign any homework, and inform you of what is on the agenda for the next school day.  Any time left at the end of class is used for completing homework or reading.

How do I know what my grade is?

I will try to update you as often as possible.  You may also check Power School as well as see me before or after school.

QUESTIONS/PROBLEMS:

Please feel free to come to me if you should have any problems in the class.  This includes any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.  I will be available everyday before and after school.  I also check my email so feel free to contact me in this way-ckain@plano88.org

I look forward to an excellent year in language arts with you!
