Course Description: Learn new strategies that will help students take control of and responsibility for their own learning. I hope you not only learn new and better ways to achieve your goals, but that you begin to have fun as you learn the following strategies! • Organizational strategies • Reading Comprehension strategies • Note-taking strategies • Memorization strategies • Test taking strategies • Homework strategies • Stress Management strategies. Course Objectives: Students will be taught – 1. Steps to organize their study time, materials, and environment. 2. Tools to become more effective in communicating their specific needs to the teacher. 3. How to identify and understand the main points that teachers and textbook publishers think are important and therefore may be included on their test. 4. Various ways to take and organize their notes so that they can turn them into useful study sheets. 5. Ways to learn material and use memorization techniques that are tailored to their own learning style. 6. Break down the different types of tests including those dreaded mid-term and final exams, and offer suggestions for succeeding on all of them. 7. Focus on developing productive habits for completing homework assignments. Help students handle stress from school and become a more positive thinker. Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of the class, students will know – 1. How to organize their study time, materials, and environment. 2. Know how they learn best. 3. Know how to communicate their specific needs to teachers. 4. Be able to identify and understand the main points that teachers and textbooks think are important and might be on a test. 5. How to take and organize notes. 6. Different ways to learn new material. 7. Ways to succeed on different types of test. 8. Develop productive habits for completing homework. 9. Be able to handle different types of stress from school and become a positive thinker. Attendance: Every student is required to attend class on a daily basis. Attendance is very important! A loss of points will result on days absent from school. Grading: Students will be graded on class participation and daily assignments. Grading scale: Based on total points recieved Assignments: Total pts. Possible per week 5-week total pts. Journal writing: 10 pts. Per day = 50 200 Vocabulary: 10 pts. Per day = 50 200 Daily Assignments: 20 pts. Per day = 100 600 Essay’s 3 total (1 every two weeks) = 20. 80 Vocabulary Crosswords: = 10 50 Notebook Binder (required for each class) = 25 125 Daily Assignments – Are your assignments from other classes or uncompleted homework. Each student is required to bring an assignment to class daily. Grade check sheets (required every 2 wks)
