The following
activity is an activation assignment. This must be completed online and e-mailed to your instructor
before you may register in DL Geography 12. It will be worth 5% of your total course mark. This
assignment should take approximately two hours in total. You may wish to do a rough copy of your
answers on paper, before completing the online version. If you quit the program, it will be submitted
automatically, even if you have not finished, so be sure to complete all sections during the same
time period and then submit.
Applying the Five Themes
The following assignment will be marked out of 100.
1. Location
· Location of a
place can be expressed in terms of its proximity or distance from another place.
· Absolute Location pinpoints a place on the Earth and is based on a grid
system such as longitude and latitude
2. Nature of place
· The physical
natural and human characteristics that describe a place and distinguish it from other
places.
3. Relationships between places
· The nature of the
interactions between the physical, natural and human environments and consequences of those
interactions for people and places.
4. Regions
· Areas that have
similar characteristics, according to a set of chosen criteria. Regions are the basic units of
geographic study.
5. Movement
· The interactions,
interrelationships and interdependencies of people and places across the face of the Earth. Movement
can involve ideas, information, communications of many kinds, as well as the physical movement of
people and goods.
