| Doubletruck | picture that takes up two pages in a yearbook or magazine |
| Survey | asking 100 people’s opinion, usually multiple choice |
| Transition | factual sentence linking one quote to another in the copy |
| Editorial | article giving the opinion of the publication’s staff |
| Lead | first paragraph used to hook the reader |
| Caption | information found below a photo |
| Break | when a story is continued on to another page (see pg. 9) |
| Budget | how much space each section gets in an issue |
| Leg | a column of type |
| Sports | a story about players, games, teams, etc. |
| Profile | story focused on one individual or small group |
| Features | a human interest story over 2 pages long usually |
| Subhead | additional title information under the headline |
| Folio | term for the page number |
| Publication Policy | the role of the administrator, adviser and staff |
| Letter to the Editor | an article written by the reader of the publication |
| Candid | An action photo that tells a story or captures a moment. Not a posed photo. |
| Sidebar | a story that accompanies the main story |
| Pica | a unit of measurement in publications |
| First Reference | the first time someone’s name is used in a story |
| Pull Quote | a quote that is pulled out to grab the reader’s attention |
| Group Identification | names the group and identifies the individuals |
| Candid caption | a two sentence caption with a short identification of those in a photo |
