Parts of Informational Text I

This activity will help students become more familiar with features of informational text.

report	describes a subject factually.
title	gives reader a clue as to what the article is about
heading	tells the reader what to expect.
subheading	use to skim and scan for the information the reader needs to know.
bold or italic words	important text the reader should pay attention to.
captions	text that explains a photograph
photographs	shows details of what subject looks like.
index	lists subjects in abc order so that a reader can easily find a specific topic or word.
diagram or cut-away	shows detail that might not ordinarily be seen.
labels	helps the reader identify specific parts
glossary	defines key words in text
Maps	tells the reader where things live or are located
chart	table or list that shows additional information about the subject.
