Foundations of the U.S. Government

The foundations of the American system of democracy can be found in four documents.

Mayflower Compact (1620)	The Pilgrims created this document as a plan for how they would govern themselves.
The Declaration of Independence (1776)	This document declared the 13 colonies independence from Britain.
The U.S. Constitution (1787)	This document is our written plan of government. It spells out the exact powers of the federal government.
The Bill of Rights	This document protects our individual freedoms; it consists of the first 10 amendments to the constitution.
