Computer Graphics Careers

AB
TYPESETTERSThese people prepare material for printing presses by transforming text and pictures into finished pages. Many continue to use more traditional methods, in which typesetting machines use photography, a CRT, or a laser to create an image on film of magnetically coded text, and then the film is used to make printing plates. Today increasingly more are using a digital imaging method, in which the material to be printed is entered into a computer and later transmitted onto film and then printing plates, or else directly onto plates.
GRAPHIC DESIGNERSThey are responsible for developing a consistent look in an advertising campaign for a product or service. They oversee the different layouts that will appear in print ads, television ads, outdoor ads, and product packaging. They may also work in design shops or multimedia companies.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS ARTISTSComputer graphics artists use computer software to create new images or modify existing ones. They may be responsible for designing packaging, marketing materials, and logos, or the graphics for television and computer-generated media.
MULTIMEDIA PRODUCERThis person will oversee the design and production of projects such as CD-ROMs and Web sites, which use video, audio, and 3-D animation. They may also make decisions about the company's operation and beinvolved in the marketing or distribution of the products.
EDITORThey prepare written material for publication or broadcasting by reviewing, rewriting, and correcting the work of writers. They may also plan the contents of printed materials, such as books and magazines, and supervise their preparation.
SOFTWARE PROGRAMMERSThey write detailed instructions that a computer will follow to complete a task, such as performing calculations or organizing data. The programmer then codes these instructions, called a "program" or "software," in a programming language.
MATHEMATICIANSThey develop new principles and new relationships between existing mathematical principles; their work is often a part of scientific and engineering advances.
APPLIED MATHEMATICIANSThey use theories and techniques, such as modeling and computational methods, to solve practical problems in business, government, engineering, and some fields of science.
ARCHITECTArchitects design buildings ranging in size from a single house to a multi-building complex or an industrial park. They may be involved in a project from the first discussion of its purpose, requirements, and budget through its completed construction.
