Flight Technology Careers

AB
PILOTSfly airplanes and helicopters. Most work in the airline industry transporting passengers and cargo. Some dust crops, monitor traffic, test aircraft, or rescue and evacuate injured people.
FLIGHT INSTRUCTORSSome are pilots. In ground-school classes they teach the basic principles of flight. Then they teach their students how to actually operate aircraft through hands-on training in planes or helicopters.
AIRCRAFT MECHANICSPerform preventive maintenance, make repairs, and complete inspections on aircraft to keep them safe for flight. They may specialize in working on certain parts of aircraft, such as engines or instruments and propellers.
MISSION CONTROL SPECIALISTSResponsible for the systems on spacecraft, such as the electrical, communications, and launch systems. They design and test these systems and, during actual flights, monitor their performance from the mission control room.
PHYSICISTUse observation and analysis to discover the laws that describe the forces of nature. They also apply physical laws and theories to problems in fields such as nuclear energy, electronics, and aerospace technology.
AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERSDesign, test, and help manufacture commercial and military aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles. They may specialize in fields such as aerodynamics or propulsion.
ASTRONAUTparticipate in space missions as crewmembers of the spacecraft. During the flight they may navigate the spacecraft, launch and retrieve satellites, and perform scientific experiments.
ASTRONOMERSUse math and physics principles to learn more about the nature of the universe. Some solve problems in navigation and space flight.
