Nouna word used as the name of something; a person, plasce, a thing or an idea.
Proper NounThe name of a specific place, thing or idea. Always capitalized: Tony Hawk, Maniac McGee, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Integrated Healthcare Services, Sunday.
Common Nounany noun that does not name a specific person, place, thing or idea. Not capitalized: child, county, winter, happiness .
Concrete NounNames a thing that is physical; it can be seen or touched. They can be either common or proper: space shuttle, Super Nintendo
Abstract NounNames something you can think about but cannot see or touch. They can be common or proper: Christianity, Judaism, poverty, satisfaction, illness, love
Collective nounNames a group or collection of persons, animals, places or things: tribe, congregation, class, team, flock, herd, gaggle clutch, litter, United States, Phillipines, Rocky Mountains; batch, cluster, bunch
Singular NounNames one person, place, thing or idea: boy, group, stage, audience, hope
Plural nounNames more than one person, place, thing or idea: boys, groups, audiences, hopes.
Compound Nouna noun made up of two or more words:football, high school, brother-in-law
Subject Nouns The noun in a sentence that does something or is being talked about.The guidance COUNSELOR looked the student in the eye and warned him, "The PRINCIPAL won't allow you to take more than one study hall.
Object NounsA noun that is used as a direct object, indirect object, or the object of a preposition: Don't worry, you'll enjoy HIGH SCHOOL (Direct object) High school teachers give STUDENTS plenty of TIME to work.(students is an indirect object; time is the object of the preposition.
