| Capture | The process of inputting video or audio clips from a videotape. It specifically refers to transferring digital video and audio into the computer. |
| Digital Audio/Video | Audio or video information that is stored in binary form (1's and 0's). |
| Digitize | The process of converting analog video (a fluctuating wave) into a digital (1's and 0's) file for use in a nonlinear editing system. |
| Duration | The length of a sequence or clip from In point to Out point. |
| DVD | (Digital Versatile Disk) A format commonly used for delivery of films and videos; also used for storage backup purposes. There are several DVD formats, which all generally use an MPEG-2 codec. |
| Edit Point | The point where two clips meet in the Timeline. Specifically, that point is the first frame of a clip on the incoming (B) side. An edit point also refers to the very first frame after one clip ends, even if there is no clip that follows |
| In Point | The marked point at which the clip will begin. |
| Establishing Shot | A wide shot used to show where an interview or event is taking place. |
| Extreme Close-Up | (XCU) A shot of an eye, a pair of lips, or a ring on a finger. |
| Firewire | A trademark name by Apple that refers to the IEEE 1394 standard for connecting devices across a fast interface used for moving large files quickly. FireWire is used to connect DV cameras and decks to computers, as well as connecting other peripherals like hard disks to computers. |
| Media Files | The video or audio shots captured into the computer and stored on a hard disk as QuickTime files. |
| Nondestructive Editing | A format for an editing platform in which media files are not altered. Only the pointers to those media files are ever altered and manipulated. |
| Noseroom | When photographing a person looking to the left or right of the camera, the subject is framed so that they are looking into the picture, not out of it. |
| Offline Clip | A clip in Final Cut Pro that does not have a connection or a link to a media file. |
| Out Point | The marked point at which the clip will end. |
| Pan | The video shot created when a camera is moved from one side of a scene to another |
| Project | A file that stores all of the pertinent information for a program such as bins, clips, and sequences. |
| Timecodes | Numbers encoded into the video that help you keep track of where certain scenes and sound bites are located on a tape. Timecodes are normally recorded as hours, minutes, seconds, and frames of video. |
| Tape Striping | the process of recording blank material on a tape to create timecode. This will eliminate timecode breaks. |
| Logging | The process of naming and setting in and out points of video clips. |
