| Hardware | The physical components of the computer system. |

| Ink-jet Printer | A type of printer that forms letters on the page by shooting tiny electrically charged droplets of ink. |
| OPAC | A library catalog that is on the Internet and allows a person to search for books and other materials using a computer that is connected to the Internet. |
| Internet | The biggest internet in the world. This worldwide information highway is comprised of thousands of interconnected computer networks and reaches millions of people in many different countries. |

| Copyright | The legal right to copy publish and sell a book or other artistic work. |
| Cookie | Information that is sent to your computer from some Web sites you visit. Information is sent back to the owner of the Web page that is used to gather information about what Web sites you like to visit. You don't have to accept a cookie. It is not necessary and if you don't want a "cookie" all you have to do is say so! |
| Bibliography | A list of books relating to a particular subject. |
| backup copy | An extra copy of a file kept for safety in case your computer or file breaks down. |
| database | A collection of data. Data is simply information. An address book or a phone directory are well known databases. Ebsco is a database of magazine articles. |
| folder | A way of organizing files by placing them into folders that look like office file folders. |
| file extension | A notation after the end of a file's name which indicates the type of file it is. |
| hyperlink | A link in a document that leads to another World Wide Web site, or another place within the same document. Hyperlinks are usually underlined or shown in a different color from the surrounding text. Sometimes hyperlinks are pictures. |
| Information Literacy | The skill we teach in library class. It is the ability to find and use information on the Internet, in books, in libraries anywhere, and anywhere else information can be found. |

| Keyword | A word used in a search, for example, to find World Wide Web documents relating to a particular subject. |
| truncation | A way to shorten a word in a search by using a symbol such as * to replace the last letters of a word. The * is called a wild card. |
