SoftwareThe programs or instructions that tell the computer what to do.
MonitorA video or computer display device.
Laser PrinterA printer that uses both laser and photographic technology to produce high quality output.
PrinterThe hardware that provides printed output from the computer.
Hard CopyA printed copy of computer output.
Compact DiscA disc on which a laser has digitally recorded information such as audio, video, or computer data.
Hard DiskA fixed, large-capacity magnetic storage medium for computer data.
Floppy DiskA portable magnetic storage medium for computer data that allows users to randomly access information.
IconA small picture or symbol respresenting a computer hardware function or component.
Ink-jet PrinterA type of printer that forms letters on the page by shooting tiny electrically charged droplets of ink.
OPACA library catalog that is on the Internet and allows a person to search for books and other materials using a computer that is connected to the Internet.
InternetThe biggest internet in the world. This worldwide information highway is comprised of thousands of interconnected computer networks and reaches millions of people in many different countries.

CopyrightThe legal right to copy publish and sell a book or other artistic work.
CookieInformation that is sent to your computer from some  Web sites you visit.  Information is sent back to the owner of the Web page that is used to gather information about what Web sites you like to visit.  You don't have to accept a cookie. It is not necessary and if you don't want a "cookie" all you have to do is say so!
BibliographyA list of books relating to a particular subject.
backup copyAn extra copy of a file kept for safety in case your computer or file breaks down.
databaseA collection of data. Data is simply information. An address book or a phone directory are well known databases. Ebsco is a database of magazine articles.
folderA way of organizing files by placing them into folders that look like office file folders.
file extensionA notation after the end of a file's name which indicates the type of file it is.
hyperlinkA link in a document that leads to another World Wide Web site, or another place within the same document. Hyperlinks are usually underlined or shown in a different color from the surrounding text. Sometimes hyperlinks are pictures.
Information LiteracyThe skill we teach in library class. It is the ability to find and use information on the Internet, in books, in libraries anywhere, and anywhere else information can be found.
Library of CongressOur nation's library in Washington, D.C. The library has a copy of every book published in the United States, as well as a large digital collection of materials at http://www.loc.gov/ .
KeywordA word used in a search, for example, to find World Wide Web documents relating to a particular subject.
truncationA way to shorten a word in a search by using a symbol such as * to replace the last letters of a word. The * is called a wild card.
