The Invasion of Europe

AB
What were mulberries?portable ports
Where did the Germans think the Allied invasion would take place?from Dover to Calis where the channel was the narrowest
Who was the Supreme Allied Commander for D-Day?Dwight D. Eisenhower
What methods did the Allies use to make the Axis believe the invasion would be at Calais? They deliberately released information to the German agents about an invasion in Calais, they set up a dummy headquarters there and placed one of their top Generals, Patton, there. They also sent an actor who resembled Montgomery to North Africa to attract Nazi attention there.
What was the Atlantic Wall?a fortification along the coast that was built by German troops
What did Rommel believe would be the most decisive time period of the invasion?the first 24 hours.
What was the original date for D-Day?une 5, 1944
Why did the invasion have to be postponed?due to bad weather. They were predicting the worst storm that had hit the channel in 20 years.
What weather conditions were they trying to create for the invasion? They wanted a full moon for the paratroopers to jump and be able to see, the tides had to be just right, they couldn't be too high or too low.
What good news did the Allies meterologists have for Ike?They expected a break in the weather on the morning of June 6th.
What harsh conditions did the paratroopers face when they jumped?Rommel had flooded the beaches and they landed in full gear in swamps. They were so weighted down many of them drowned in their full gear. They were also spread out farther than they were suppose to be so they couldn't help one another and they had to regroup.
What was chosen as H-Hour?6:30 a.m. on June 6, 1944
What two beaches did the Americans land on?Omaha and Utah
Even though the invasion was superbly planned what obstacles did the troops meet? The channel was particularly rough and they didn't expect so many men would become seasick. There was vast confusion under enemy fire. Men died uselessly when they left their landing craft too early and stepped into water over their head and drowned. Many tanks equipped with floation devices that had worked so well in practice did not work. The Allied air bombing that was to have knocked out German beach defense guns had not been accurate. Within the first 10 minutes at Omaha every officer and sergeant had been killed or wounded and it became a struggle for survival and rescue.
Was Rommel at D-Day when the attack started?no, his meterologists also told him an invasion would not be possible so he flew back to Germany to be with his wife for her birthday.
