Describe the deportations.Jews were forced to buy a one way ticket, 4 cents for every mile of track they rode. Children under 10 rode for half fare and group rates were available for deportations of more than 400. The Reichsbahn (railroad) did not charge the SS for the empty trains that came back. The Jews were told to pack a suitcase and to bring tools of their trade. Some trips took days others took more than a week. The cattle cars were sealed and they were given a bucket for bodily needs. The cars were freezing cold in the winter and suffocatingly hot in the summer. The stench was overwhelming. When the doors were opened upon arrival, grateful passengers though that the worst ordeal was behind them. Many of them died during the deportations.
