MachiavelliThought people were generally evil, selfish and unable to rule themselves. He believe in a monarchy with no representatives, that religion should be used to control people, and that war is inevitable.
HobbesHobbes believed that people were generally swelfish and can't be trusted to rule themselves. He felt a monarchy with some representatives is best(but King has final say), he also felt that war is unavoidable.
John LockeBelieved that people were basically good, reasonable, and able to rule themselves. He felt democracy was the best for of government, he felt that conflicts could be settlesd peacefully (war can be avoided) and that there is no such thing as devine right (people chosen by God to rule)
Maslow's Hierarchy of needMost basic needs are on the bottom of the pyramid, decreasing in necessity as the go up. Needs on the lower levels must be met before the hier levels can be addressed. The highest level (dreams) is the only one that can't be satisfied (or met)
Physiological needsLowest, most basic needs on Maslow's hierarchy of Food, Oxygen, Sleep, and water.
Safety needsThe second level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes shelter, clothing, job, healthcare, and money
Social needsThe third level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs that includes friends, family, and love
Esteem needsThe 4th level of of Maslow's hierarchy of needs that includes attention, recognition, and accomplishment.
DreamsThe final and highest level of Maslow's hierarchy of meeting your potential cannot ever be satisfied.
Purpose of GovernmentAccording to John Locke, in the Founding Fathers, the purpose of government is to protect the natural rights of the people
Natural rightsTHe rights we are born with including life, liberty and property
ConsentThe government gets its power from the consent of the people, (ie.the people give the government the power)
Social contractPeople follow certain laws and rules in exchange for the protection they get from those laws. These laws are important for the common welfare of the people (everyone's good)
Limited GovernmentNot givng one branch all of the power. We have three branches and a system of checks and balances
DemocracyAgovernment run by the people through representatives
MonarchyA form of government run by a king or ruler who makes all decisions without the say of the people
American DreamThe American dream can be different for everbody and has changed over time, but it is the right to live, to work, to be yourself, and to become whatever you vision may be.
