INTRODUCTION: Welcome to Farmer Brown's Farm! Our class has been hired by Mr. Brown to solve a great MYSTERY that has recently occurred here! You won't believe it, but Mr. Brown's POND DISAPPEARED LAST WEEK! Yes, it was gone, left with only mud. And guess what it did the next week? IT REAPPEARED, came back just like that! Mind you, it wasn't a very big pond. In fact, it was quite shallow. But none-the-less, disappearing water is quite a mystery to Mr. Brown Was it magic? Was it a cruel trick played by Mr. Brown's cows? Or was it good old Mother Nature just doing her thing? Let's investigate and find out! TASK: The students will be divided into three groups, each coming up with a portion of the answer to Mr. Brown's question: "WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS MY WATER UP TO?" Each group will reasearch the "Water Cycle" on the internet. Each group will be given a certain topic pertaining the water cycle to focus on. After completing each assigned process, each team will submit to Mr. Brown an oral explanation to what his wily water has been doing. Each team will then construct a short story exhibiting knowledge they have obtained about the water cycle. PROCESS: GROUP ONE: Along with the WATER CYCLE, your topic is EVAPORATION. 1. Using web links provided, research the water cycle. Focus on "evaporation". As a team, come up with a general definition for "evaporation". Be sure to watch Drippy the Raindrop story in Link 5. 2. Choose activities to play from activity page. 3. Prepare how you are going to answer Mr. Brown when he asks: "Where did my pond go?" GROUP TWO: Along with the WATER CYCLE, your topic is CONDENSATION. 1. Using web links provided, research the water cycle. Focus on "condensation". As a team, come up with a general definition for "condensation". Be sure to watch Drippy the Raindrop story in Link 5. 2. Choose activities to play from activity page. 3. Prepare how you are going to answer Mr. Brown when he words you can "What does water do after it evaporates?" GROUP THREE: Along with the WATER CYCLE, your topic is PRECIPITATION. 1. Using web links provided, research the water cycle. Focus on "precipitation". As a team, come up with a general definition for "precipitation". 2. Choose activities to play from activity page. 3. Prepare how you are going to answer Mr. Brown when he asks: "How did the water reappear?" ALL THREE GROUPS: As a group, write at least a half page adventure about a raindrop (like Drippy)as he travels through the water cycle. Describe an exciting journey that the raindrop could go on. How does the little drop feel? Use as many water cycle words you have learned from the internet and the activities ("evaporation" for example). Watch your spelling, but most important, BE CREATIVE! EVALUATION: Based on short story each group write, using following rubric: 1 POINT 2 POINTS 3 POINTS ____________________________________________________________ JOURNEY no details 1-3 details 4 or more DETAILS ____________________________________________________________ SPELLING 3 or more 1-2 errors no PUNCTUATE error error ____________________________________________________________ USE OF no words 2-3 words 3 or more WATER used used used CYCLE correctly correctly correctly WORDS ____________________________________________________________ CONGRATULATIONS!! You have successfully made the neverending trip that all water everywhere has gone on since before the DINOSAURS! Now you know how (and why) water comes and goes and the different ways it can be stored. Just think, you could be drinking the same water as those dinosaurs did! Good luck and Mr. Brown thanks you! Wait a minute, Mrs. Brown just called and said the ice in her freezer disappeared! OH, NO!
