GERUND

verb + '-ing'

It can be used:

1. as the subject of the sentence:

eg.: Swimming is my favorite pastime.



2. after certain verbs:

can't help/ dislike/ enjoy/ mind/ practise/ (can't) stand/ suggest/ consider/ miss/ avoid /  it's no use/good        it's worth/ be used to

eg.:I dislike getting up early. He couldn't help laughing.
    It's no use trying to escape.



3.. after verbs + prepositions:

be keen on, be good at, look forward to, insist on, apologize for, be interested in, succeed in, be fond of

eg.: The student apologized for being late. She looks     forward to meeting him at the party.  


INFINITIVE

verbs + 'to-infinitive'

agree/ appear/ ask/ attempt/want/ decide/expect/ hope/plan/
refuse/ pretend/ promise/ seem.

eg.:I've decided to buy a Swatch. I want to have a watch that won't break.



GERUND OR INFINITIVE

verbs + 'ing-form' or 'to-infinitive' (no or  slight difference in meaning)

begin / bother/ continue/hate/ like/ love /prefer/ stand

eg.: He started to talk so fast that I couldn't understand a word.
He started talking so fast that I couldn't understand a word
