For the coming week, please revise the papers that were just returned to you and write the first draft of an essay on plagiarism. Your title should be: "What is plagiarism?"
In this essay, use a four or five paragraph format similar to the model you were given and define what plagiarism is with a few examples to demonstrate your points. You can go to Google.com on the web and look for sites on plagiarism. You will find a lot of them. Write down the main ideas about what plagiarism is with any examples they give you. Each type of plagiarism should get one paragraph of your essay. Also provide an introduction and a conclusion. Don't worry too much about the grammar in the draft, but do type it so that you can go back and edit after we go over the essay and edit it in class.
Also try to provide a good thesis statement that tells your reader what you are going to write about.
Read ahead to the next chapter of Refining Composition skills and observe how to develop an example. In your essay, you are writing about examples of plagiarism.
In your journal, write about what you think plagiarism is, and your feelings about it. Does it surprise you that the rules are so strict? Did you have rules like this in your country?
Next week there will be a punctuation quiz in class. If you have trouble with punctuation, especially run-ons and comma splices, go to one of the grammar links and practise.
