***ADDITIONAL INFORMATION***

A knowledge of basic reading strategies and applying them regularly helps students to more easily comprehend what they read. Review these strategies with your child and encourage him or her to use them. They are outlined below.

READING STRATEGIES FOR COMPREHENSION:

Mark or Highlight text - Underline or highlight important information within the text, including main ideas, names, vocabulary words. When reviewing, this information will stand out for you.

Question - Question yourself as you read. Ask yourself if you agree with the author. Jot down questions you may have as you read and see if they are answered as you continue reading. If not, you may have to go to another source of information.

Visualize - Creating images in your mind can help you understand what you read. Make a simple sketch of what you're reading to help you remember the passage when you review.

Clarify - Stop every few paragraphs and make sure you are understanding what you're reading. There's no point in reading on if you are unsure of the first few paragraphs! Re-read to try to make sense of what you're reading. Summarize for yourself every few paragraphs to keep information clear in your mind.

Predict - Make predictions about what will happen next. Read on to see if you're predictions happened.

React or Connect - What is your opinion of what you read? What does it remind you of? How can you connect it to your life? Knowing something about a topic before you read will help you to understand what you are reading better.

These strategies are all important in order to be an ACTIVE reader. Active readers use them all to get the most out of their reading.
