Monday, March 28,2005

Students discussed the Friday field trip and were given an extra cridet opportunity. They finished work on their portfolios for upcoming conferences. Large laminated maps of the Middle East and Central Asia were distributed along with almanacs and atlases. Students used these resources collaboring with a partner to answer 40 questions in a scavenger hunt. Numerous maps and chart reading skills were practiced and reinforced while learning information about this important region of the world.

Students continued collaborating on the map and chart reading assignment. When finished they read a Jr. Scholastic article entitled, "Crisis in the Middle East". At the conclusion is a map of the Middle East with 10 questions on page 17. Students wrote out the answers to these questions. and could then work on related homework.
HOMEWORK: Read pages 442-445 on the history of Israel in your textbook. On the sheet given to you, record down the dates of the fifteen typed events. Put these in the order they happened numbering 1 to 15. This is due Thursday.

Students checked their Middle East/Central Asia Scavenger Hunt 40 Questions. They also checked their Israel map 10 questions and turned them in. They were reminded of essential learning on Asia test tomorrow.
HOMEWORK: Complete Homework explained above on 3/29/05. Due tomorrow.

Students took the 3rd. quarter essential learnings test on the geography of Asia and research skills. Upon completing the test they were given a Jr. Scholastic article on the Middle East conflict to read.
HOMEWORK: Check your work on the sequence of events occuring in Israel's history. Bring this paper to class next Monday to prepare for making a timeline.

As background preparation for studying the details of the Middle East conflicts, students viewed a video on Islam. After watching the video once, they received a series of Fill in the Blank questions. Students then watched the video a second time and filled in the answers which focused on the main ideas behind Islam. Students checked their papers to make sure they were accurate.
HOMEWORK: Make sure the fifteen events in Israel's History are ordered correctly with the correct dates. This will be checked on Monday and used to complete a timeline.

Students checked their Israel History events sheets. Timeline paper was distributed and explained so students could begin making a timeline. Using large wall maps, the rationale for studying the history of the Middle East and its conflicts was covered. Students were introduced to the powerful award-winning video entitled, "Promises". Students began seeing "Promises" and will continue it tomorrow.
HOMEWORK: Work on timeline of the History of Israel. Place the sixteen events on the timeline in the correct place. Four events must be illustrated. Any additional illustrations are extra credit. The timeline is due next Monday, April 11th.

Tuesday, April 5, and Wednesday, April 6,2005

Students continued viewing "Promises", a very engaging and powerful, award-winning documentary. There were only brief discussions for clarification. Next week students will use the content of the video for an important activity on conflict resolution.
HOMEWORK: See above. Same as Monday, April 5th.

Monday, April 11, 2005

Students turned in the portfolio conference reflection forms and turned in their timelines of the history of Israel. Next studnets finished watching the video, "Promises". There was only a few moments to make comments and receive the homework assignment related to Promises.
HOMEWORK: Write down what you think are the five most important ideas for facts expressed in "Promises". Bring these written ideas to class tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Today classes are shortened to 30 minutes for assembly, reward pizza party, team celebration and talent share. During class students shared in goups their written ideas about the important things they learned from the video,"Promises". Each group determined the three most important ideas from the group which they recorded down on large construction paper to share with the class. Sharing from the groups will be continued tomorrow.
HOMEWORK: Watch the news for important information related to the Arab, Israel conflict. What progress did U.S. Presdident George Bush help to bring about?

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Students completed sharing their collective ideas about what they learned from "Promises". Next we went over the Timeline of Israel's history and then read an important Arab-Israeli Crisis unpdate article in a recent Jr. Scholastic. Discussion and explanation followed.
HOMEWORK: Make sure portfolio reflection is completed by you and your parents. Turn this in by Friday.

Students selected a parent to write a thank you note to for providing drinks and a dessert for our Team Celebration on Tuesday. Materials were handed out on Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Students read about the selected or assigned religion and filled out a chart comparing the three religions of the Middle East.
HOMEWORK: Complete the thank you note and bring to class tomorrow.

Friday, April 15, 2005

Students completed their reading and notetaking and then collaborated with teammates to fill out a spider graphic organizer on their religion to share with the class. The spider diagram graphic organizer was written on a transparency. These were then shared with the class so students could fill out their charts of comparison on the six categories of God, Holy Book, Key Beliefs, Practices and Rituals, Worship Services, and Sects. Only one of the three religions was shared. The other two will be completed on Monday.HOMEWORK: Bring three highlighters to class on Monday - pink, blue, and yellow.

Monday, April 18. 2005

Students finished sharing their information discovered about the religion they were assigned and they took notes on their comparitive chart. Looking over their charts they could see similarities and differences in the faiths. These can be best expressed in a Venn diagram. Such a diagram was distrubuted and students used colored highlighters create a colorful display of the similarities and differences between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
HOMEWORK: Carefully look over your colored diagram. Show it to your parents and explain to them how you read it. Bring it to class tomorrow.

Students were given fliers about an extra credit opportunity to view a TV special sponsored by SPRINT and KMBC TV. It is a program entitled "Primary Colors" dealing with the issue of intergration of schools and providing equal opportunities for all in our society. Next students discussed the center of the Venn diagrams focusing on how all of the similarities of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Finally they viewed several CNN video segments on Resources in the Middle East and the conflicts and challenges.
HOMEWORK: Share the venn diagram with your parents and discuss with them what you are learning about the Middle East.

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Students continued viewing and discussing video segments on countries in the Middle East. The content was linked to the 5 themes of Geography, the nature of the conflict in the Middle East and the importance of this region of the world to the United States.
HOMEWORK: Make sure all make up work is completed and turned in.
Thursday, April 21, 2005

Students received Middle East review/study guides for their test next week (Thursday). Videos were completed and discussed as explained above.
HOMEWORK: Go over your study guide for the Middle East Test. Highlight any word you do not know and write down your questions for tomorrow.
