World Languages Department The Albany Academies Sra. Puente-Windle windlev@albanyacademies.org 465-1461 ext 328 _______________________________________________________________________ BIENVENIDOS A SPANISH 7th Welcome to Sra. Windle’s Spanish class. I am very pleased to have you as my student. We will have an exciting time learning a second language this year. Learning another language will help you expand your personal horizons and become a responsible citizen. Your ability to talk to others and gather information beyond the world of English will contribute to your community and your country. This course is designed to continue expanding your knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and grammar structures. The goal of the Spanish 7 Course is to enable students to reach a basic level of proficiency in the four skills of language study: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. A variety of activities are planned to stimulate your learning. We will be using technology and focusing on communication through a method called TPR (Total Physical response). This method is based on brain research and current language acquisition theory, and it is fun!. This will be accomplished through speaking exercises, conversations, reading selections, storytelling, skits, games, presentations and writing assignments. You will be also required to create your own dictionary and short stories as part of TPR homework. In addition to examining selected literary works, you will have the opportunity to explore cultural elements of Spanish speaking countries. This means arriving on time, having all needed materials (books, homework, pens, etc.), and being ready to focus on Spanish. 2. Show respect at all times- for your classmates, your teacher, and yourself 3. Cooperate. This entails participating fully in all classroom activities, following instructions, and in general doing what the teacher asks. It also means refraining from disruptive behavior in class (socializing, horseplay, etc.) 4. Be organized 5. Honor diversity 6. Use Spanish in class. 7. Do your homework. Additional policies Homework is practice, and it will be checked for completeness. Compositions will be collected and graded on a ten-point scale. To receive full credit for effort, the assignment must be done on timely basis and will be collected during the assigned class period. To receive half credit, students need to complete the missed assignment by the next day and hand in the homework for that day as well. Homework will only be credited during the week it was issued. Missed quizzes (or similar obligations) due to an excused absence. These must be made up within one week of the original date unless the student receives my explicit permission for an extension. Absences. You should get phone numbers of some other students and call someone to get the assignment when you are absent. Being absent is not a valid excuse for not being prepared for class or not having homework done. Plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious breach of academic ethics and will not be tolerated. This includes the use of automated translation technology to translate anything other than individual words and short idiomatic expressions. All assignments must be in the student’s own work unless cooperative efforts have specifically been authorized Class participation. Everyone is expected to participate during class. This includes preparation for class, voluntary participation, listening, promptness, preparation, and use of target language. The following rubric shows how class participation will be assessed.
