ABD569 Occupational Health & Safety Management in the Natural Resource Industry. Welcome to OH&S Management in the NR Industry! Students enrolled this semester who have sucessfully completed ABD507 have been (or will be) RPLed out of learning outcomes 1,2,3 and 5. LEARNING OUTCOMES In order to achieve sucess, on completion of this module, students will be able to develop a plan for the implementation of an Occupational Health & Safety Management System for your workplace. 4.1 Identify the elements of an OH&S implementation Plan; 4.2 Outline the implications for management policy and action by OH&S Reps and OH&S Safety Committees in your workplace; 4.3 Outline the elements of an effective information system for documentating work related illness and injury. Performance will be awarded on the basis of:- 65% to 75% “Competent – J1”; 76% to 85% “Competent – J2”; >85% “Competent – J3”; or >65% “Not yet Competent – M” DURATION OF THE MODULE The total nominal hours for Learning Outcome four in ABD569 are 12 hours. There are no contact hours as the course is being presented externally through the web site. One one hour face to face session will be set at a mutually convenient time on a thursday. The balance will be in the students own time. ASSESSMENT This module will be progressively assessed throughout the course by written reports (emailed to the teacher) and assignments. The major assignment will be due on 06/06/2001 and is worth 75% of the assessment. Weekly (short) assignments are worth 2.5 marks each. IMPORTANT NOTE Assignments will lose 10% for each day work is late. Extensions will only be given in rare situations and these must be negotiated with the teacher at least a week before the due date. Assignments a week late will not be marked and recorded as an automatic failure ie “M”. EVERY WEEK THE WEEKLY NOTE WILL CONTAIN THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT AND SHOULD BE CHECKED REGULARLY BY EACH STUDENT IMPORTANT WEEKLY NOTE WEEK ONE 28/3/01 Students are to read pages 1-9 of Australian Standard AS/NZS4804:1997, Occupational health & safety management systems-General guidelines on principles, systems and supporting techniques. NB This document has been placed in the "Frozen Section" of the library. You are then to e-mail me by 3/4/01 with a short outline of the five OHSMS Principles and provide an example of principal one. WEEK TWO 04/04/01 Students must all by now have an email address. You are to read pages 10-15 of Australian Standard AS/NZS4804:1997, Occupational health & safety management systems-General guidelines on principles, systems and supporting techniques. You are then to email me by 10/04/01 a short comment on the importance of policy and planning in OH&S. I also want you to provide me with an example of where a plan for MIT could complement an OH&S plan. WEEK THREE 11/04/01 There are still twostudents who have not given me anything for assignment one, let alone two. Two others are late for assignment 2. One of you has not given me an email address so BEWARE You are on the path to failure! I will send you all feedback soon. The exercise due after Easter, ie 25/4/01, is to continue to read the standard pages 16 to 34. All I want you to do this week is read the documents and let me know by email that you have finished -easy eh? peter WEEK FOUR 24/4/01 This week I want you to read the handouts I have given (sent) you from DPI and compare these documents to the IOS standard which you have all now read. The assignment will appear on this site next week. WEEK FIVE 01/05/01 No short assignment this week! Instead this is the major assignment due 06/06/01 You are the Workplace Health & Safety Officer for the organisation "Whale Watch Moreton Bay". This is a small six person company which runs a boat from a base in Wynnum Manly Boat Harbour and has two sales/admin persons, a qualified boat driver (12 m boat), deckhand, interpretative officer and general hand (WH&S Officer) who can fill in for all the others. The company runs seven five hour trips a week during the season (May to September) and carries up to 30 passengers per trip. Your task is to prepare an outline of the Workplace Health & Safety Plan for the company. Using the material from APHS previously provided as a prompt, Develop the outline and provide details of the elements of the plan, the WH&S Committee, the responsibilities of all personel with respect to WH&S and provide a guide for reporting and recording details of injury and WH&S incidents which may be experienced.
