This web page is for students on academic probation and for parents of students on academic probation. It is intended to be a resource for both as well as an avenue to improved performance in school. ACADEMIC PROBATION POLICY: At St. Pius X, a student is placed on academic probation because (s)he either has a cumulative GPA below 2.00 OR has two failure grades from the previous semester.
While on probation, a semester long-status, a student is expected to improve grades.
The school administration notifies the respective parents, advising them of the probation status. One expectation the school has of both parent and student is coming to school earlier on late start days and taking advantage of special help availability, including use of The Learning Center, either before school or after school, or both. Students, too, may be advised to come to a subject's "resource room" during seminar if requested by a teacher.
There are a number of ways to achieve this academic improvement:
1) complete and turn in all assignments on time
2) take advantage of late start days and seek help from individual teachers
3) stay after school as needed to see teachers OR visit The Learning Center after school in the library
4) have the student check in with his/her mentor at Pius either daily or every other day (this is a service of the National Honor Society and / or other students who volunteer in this capacity). The mentors will assist a student individually OR act as a resource person for the student. In addition, some students will be assigned teacher mentors as well.
5) have parents require that agenda books for assignments be initialized daily by each teacher, and then check homework each night -- without fail! Please do not fall for the line "I got it done in school." If the student does, in fact, complete the assignment in school, then require that you, the parent, see the work. You can then check this assignment against the 3-week report that comes via mail or email.
6) check the school counselor's main page for a master tutor list.

Plans for 2011-2012 are that each teacher will have peer tutors who can assist students as needed, both on the late start mornings as well as other times.
A student on academic probation has that status for one semester. It is not to be confused with athletic eligibility / ineligibility which is checked and determined every six weeks. Even if a student's grades are improving to where the present GPA is above 2.00, the student remains on academic probation for the semester.
Parent Letter Re: Academic Probation
If a student fails a required class, (s)he must make up that class during the summer, either through the respective public school district's summer school, through an independent study class associated with a college or university, or through a certified teacher or tutor who has the approval of the St. Pius X administration. Mr. Lee, Mr. Monachino, Mrs. Cascone, or Mr. Murphy will have information on available sources for this makeup. You are welcome to visit the "Counseling" web page and look for the link about "credit recovery."
