An ADJECTIVE is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun. To modify a word means to describe the word or to make the meaning more definite. An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun by telling what kind, which one, how many, or how much. WHAT KIND ? WHICH ONE OR ONES ? Sometimes an adjective can come after the word it modifies. The cat is ANGRY. (angry modifies cat) The child, TIRED and HUNGRY, was complaining. (tired and hungry modify child) PROPER ADJECTIVES are formed from a proper noun and begin with a capital letter. China--Chinese Inca- Incan Judaism- Jewish DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES THIS, THAT, THESE, THOSE can be used both as adjectives and pronouns. When they modify a noun they are called demonstrative adjectives and when used alone they are called demonstrative pronouns. ADJECTIVE: These books are exciting. PRONOUN: These are exciting.
