Adobe Systems introduced Acrobat 1.0 in 1993. PDF is short for Portable Document Format. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free download product which enables users of varying publishing applications to view documents in its original format. For example before this product was introduced a document created in MSWord could not be sent over the internet for others to read if they did not have the same software. The PDF is widely used on the internet to share information.

 

A document that is a PDF maintains original fonts, graphics, and images that were created on the original software. These documents cannot be changed in any way but can be viewed and printed. This aspect of the software allows a document to be read as the writer intended.
