Career Management

Welcome to Career Management. In this course you will have the opportunity to research different career fields and find out more about yourself. We will look at matching your personality and preferences to career fields. Your major paper and research paper ties in with Language Arts 4/Senior English.

Unit One

Learning About Yourself.

The Unit 1.0 assignments should take you about three weeks to complete. Plan to do three assignments per day!

Unit 1.01

1. Read page 31 - 65 in your binder.

2. Go to the Type Focus Personality Inventory link below and complete the inventory. You must supply your real name. There are 66 questions so do this at the start of a class period. This inventory will help to show you whether you are an extrovert or introvert. sensing or intuitive, thinking or feeling and judging or perceiving personality type. (pages 54 - 57)

3. Go to the Platinum Rule Assessment link. This one will only take a few minutes. You will need to use the email address for use at school or a personal email address to get your results. This one shows whether you are a director, thinker, relater or socializer (pages 31 - 37 and 46 - 53).

4. Complete the Keirsey Temperment Sorter below. You will need to answer over 60 short questions. This is a forced choice profile. That means you need to pick the one of the two answers that best describes you. This will not always be easy but just do your best.

5. See Mrs. Ray for directions on completing the Holland Code profile. This will give you a lot of information that you will use to match up with potential career fields.

6. Complete page 17 in your folder "My Career Values".

7. Complete People, Things or Data? page 18. Count your agree answers in each area and record at the bottom then answer the questions on page 19.

8. Complete Ratings Aptitudes on page 20 and 21. You are answering for each item whether this is something you do really well, only average, or not very well. Don't forget the answers on page 21.

9. Complete page 22 - Think About Your Skills. Put an answer in every box. Then highlight the things you enjoy doing and put a check by your best skills. Answer the questions at the bottom.

10. On page 23 - Right for the Job - you are going to paste three classified ads. Use the local paper or the Virginia Pilot to find three ads that interest you. It does not have to be something you would love to do, but something you could do for a while. On the bottom list three values you have and how important these values are to you and then under each job you will indicate how well they match. An example would be if you valued having weekends off. Then if you selected a job that works weekends it would not match. Then on the back you will list personality traits you have such as punctual, works alone, etc. and how well they match with the jobs listed.

11. We will complete page 25 together in class. Let Mrs. Ray know when you are ready for this assignment.

12. Create a poster which explains/represents one of the SCANS Skills.

You must select a different one than anyone else in the class. Please sign up with Mrs. Ray to avoid overlap.

13. Complete the Super IQ Test using the link below.

14. Complete the Self Esteem Scale on page 26 - 27. You will transfer your answers to apge 27 and then total them.

15. Now is where you put all the results together. You will use these two pages as you go through the course. Transfer your score totals/answers to page 28 - 30. We will skip the Vocabulary and Math Aptitude test. Just indicate whether those or your better areas or not.

16. Can you believe it? You are now ready to take Quiz 1.01 below. If you earn a score of 85% or higher continue with 1.02. If not:

17. Read Chapter 12, pages 209 - 222 in From School to Work 18. Retake Quiz 1.01. If you do not earn a score of 85% or higher this time, see Mrs. Ray for additional work.

Unit 1.02

1. Complete p. 72 SCANS Skills/Competencies listing one of your current strengths and one aspect of your current competency level that needs to be improved.

2. On page 73, SCANS Competencies, rank your SCANS competencies from the lowest of one to the highest of 5.

3. On page 74, Personality Traits, circle the traits that describe your personality. Of those you have circled, put a plus beside the ones that are positive and a minus beside the ones that are negative. Then answer the questions below using complete sentences.

4. Complete the Attitude/Behavior Connection on page 75 – 76. If you do not work, then think of the habits you have in school and in helping out around the house doing chores or anywhere else you would show these behaviors.

5. You have now spent a lot of time reviewing your own personality and learning more about yourself. Now it is time to complete your self-portrait. Review the pages you have filled out as you write this.

6. Values are things that are important to you. From the list on page 78, Work Values, number these from the most important to you to the least important. Then fill out the bottom of the page.

7. On pages 79 – 81, rank the skills that are your strengths and your weaknesses. By each one you list check off those that are valuable to working in a variety of different jobs or careers as usable. On page 81, fill in the traits under the general headings that you can think of that apply to you as strengths or weaknesses and then complete the page.

8. Complete page 82 using pictures from the computer or the magazines and newspapers in the classroom. You may also add words to describe the pictures.

9. Complete page 85, Rating Your Personal Traits,. Be sure to complete the bottom for your lowest five traits.

10. Take Quiz 1.02. If you earn 85% or better, continue with 1.03 below. If not, go back over and review your work and then retest. If you still do not have an 85% or better, see Mrs. Ray for additional work.

1.03. Analyze the impact of personal growth/development and change throughout live.

1. Think back over the last three days. Record on page 105 how you spent your days. Did you use your time in a way that it helped you or someone else? If so, indicate that in the last column. Do not record leisure activities that are inappropriate for school other than as leisure. On page 106 list the three top rather than the five top on this page.

2. Now turn to page 107 and 108. On page 108 color in what you think the percentage of time is that you will have for the three categories when you are an adult parent and now as a student.

3. Using From School to Work read Chapter 23 on pages 425 – 443. 4. Use the list at the top of page 108 to fill in the blanks below. Remember that earned income is what you earn while working and Deductions are what is taken from your pay before you see it. Fixed expenses are bills that are the same amount each month and flexible expenses are the ones that vary from month to month.

5. Turn to page 111 and complete the reality budget. You will start off with using the Occupational Outlook Handbook online to find the average annual salary for a career you select to complete the top. Use the internet or newspapers to find the vehicle and home of your choice. We will use a loan chart to figure out the payments if the ad does not give an amount. Talk to your parents to find out what the average utilities and telephone bills equal and enter those amounts. Examples for miscellaneous expenses are on page 113.

6. Go to Change Cycle and read about the change processes in the life cycle.

7. Complete page 132. Use colored pencils or markers to fill in across on each row when you think the different categories will apply to your life. Post-secondary is education after high school. Parent caregiver means when you may be taking care of your parents when they are no longer able to be on their own.

8. Turn to page 133. Circle the five items you think are most important in motivating you to do your best.

9. Complete the stress vulnerability inventory on page 134 – 135. Be sure to total your score and mark it on page 135.

10. Read Chapter 20 beginning on page 235 in “From School to Work.” And then complete page 116, Agencies/Laws.

11. Take Quiz 1.03 below. If you achieve an 85% or better review and take the 1.0 Exam. If not, review and complete the following:

12. Complete pages 130 = 131: Life Roles and Decisions.

13. Complete page 119 – Wellness Strategies. P> 14. Complete page 120 – Handling Job Stress.

15. Retest on 1.03. If you achieve an 85% or better continue on to the 1.0 Exam. If not then complete:

16. Page 121 – Preventing Accidents.

17. Pages 122 – 123 Personal Wellness Plan.

18. Complete page 124 – Fun at Work.

19. Complete page 125 – The Wheel of Life.

20. Retake Quiz 1.03. If you fail to obtain an 85% or better, see Mrs. Ray for additional work.

Exam 1.0

1. Exam 1.0. If you obtain 85% or better continue on with unit 2 but if not:

3. Complete p. 129 – How Am I going to Get there

4. Retest.

If you fail to obtain an 85% or better see Mrs. Ray for additional work. If you obtained an 85% or better then continue with unit 2.
