Unit 1 covers computer systems. Section 1.01 covers the purposes, components, and uses of computer hardware and software. Section 1.02 covers operating system functions while Section 1.03 covers security, confidentiality and ethical issues related to data, hardware and software. The final unit, 1.04 discusses alternative input devices. Most of this unit can be completed while waiting for a computer login account.
Unit 1.01 Hardware and Software
1. Review Powerpoint Unit A101 with Mrs. Ray
2. Read pages A1-6 to 14 in binder.
3. Complete page A1-4 "Parts of the Desktop Computer" This should be in your folder in the file cabinet. If you need a reference, look at pages A1-9 to 11 in your binder. Don't forget to put your name on the top of each page and turn it in by putting it in the basket on Mrs. Ray's desk.
4. Complete pages A1-15 and 16 in your Folder. Don't forget to turn it in.
5. CompleteQuiz 1.01. If you do not earn a grade of 85% on this quiz, then you must retake the quiz.
Unit 1.02 Operating Systems
1. Read pages A1-20-22 in your binder.
2. Obtain a disk from Mrs. Ray and boot your computer using Linux. Spend at least 30 minutes exploring the programs available other than the Internet.
3. Complete in your binder pages A1-23
4. Complete Quiz 1.02. If you do not earn a grade of 85% on this quiz, then you must retake the quiz.
Unit 1.03 Computer Security
1. Read pages A1-26-29 in your binder.
2. Complete page A1-30 "Who Am I?" in your folder.
3. Read pages A1-32 and 33 in your binder. Keep this page open in order to refer to it while completing the next assignment.
4. Using pages A1-32 and 33 as reference, complete pages A1-34 to 36. For each scenario, you must list the statue that was violated. You may simply list the number such as 14.457 for extortion. Then you must list whether it is a felony or a misdemeanor. You may simply put M or F as appropriate. The final part you must list for each one is a brief explanation (using full sentences) of why it was a crime.
5. Complete Quiz 1.03. If you do not earn a grade of 85% on this quiz, then you must retake the quiz.
Unit 1.04 Alternative Input Devices
1. Review PowerPoint Slideshow 1.04 with Mrs. Ray.
2. Read page A1-47 in your binder and then using the internet and magazines available in the classroom, complete A1-49 in your folder. You will list 9 different models of handheld computers. You may wish to search for PDA or Handheld to help you find them. Please list at least three features. You may wish to use a shopping site to find prices. Use Google Product Search to find prices as well.
3. Complete page A1-50 in your folder. Refer back to the PowerPoint pages if necessary to correctly identify the devices. One of the devices is a probe..
4. Using the PowerPoint pages, complete pages A1-52 and 53 in your binder.
5. Complete Quiz 1.04. If you do not earn a grade of 85% on this quiz, then you must retake the quiz.
Unit 1 Exam
You are now ready to take Exam 1.0. You must obtain an 85% on the exam to move on.
1. Exam 1.0
2. If you earned a score of 85% or higher go on to unit 2. If you did not earn a score of 85% or higher then you are to complete A1-59 and 60 in your folder.
3. Retake quizzes 1.01 to 1.04.
4. Retake Exam 1.0.
5. If you did not earn a score of 85% or higher, see Mrs. Ray for additional coursework prior to retesting.
This unit should take up to 7 class days to complete.
