“Liturgy is like a strong tree whose beauty is derived from the continuous renewal of its leaves, but whose strength comes from the old trunk, with solid roots in the ground.”
~ Pope Paul VI

Your children became responsible Fourth Grade citizens over the last 10 months.  They showed great motivation, demonstrated strong work ethic, and displayed exemplary manners.  My hope is that the students found happiness from the past school year and have excitement for the summer and year to come.

Here are a few highlights from 4th grade in the last month:

Language Arts – We read the book Tuck Everlasting and discussed the theme of immortality.  We studied the author’s writing techniques and her use of personification.

Math – We are ending the year in math by practicing perimeter and area formulas.

Religion – We reviewed the 10 Commandments and how they apply to our daily lives.  To end the year, we are reminding ourselves what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus.

Science – We studied physical sciences with a focus on electricity and magnetism.  We made curcuits at the Intel Museum.  We are always continually exploring plant and animal ecosystems in life science.

Social Studies – We learned about California’s continuous change of power and government.  To end the year, we will discuss the formation of the Bear Flag Republic and the California constitution.

Please visit the apps and websites we used in the classroom this year to review and practice all of the subject areas over the summer:

Reading - pick up a few books to read for fun and complete the summer reading assignment for 5th grade

Math - have fun on DreamBox and Mathletics!

Science - go to Discovery Elementary Science through CTN and estudiesweekly.com

Social Studies - go to Scott Foresman CA History-Social Science online and estudiesweekly.com

Religion - use Catholic Resources through CTN

Have a restful and enjoyable summer!

Blessings,
Miss Larsen

Stages of Development

Typically, children go through specific stages of development as they progress from nonreaders to fluent readers. In leveled reading, books are written to various levels of difficulty, gradually introducing developing readers to new challenges. The stages of reading development are commonly separated as follows:

Early Emergent Readers (Reading A-Z levels aa-C)
Emergent Readers (Reading A-Z levels D-J)
Early Fluent Readers (Reading A-Z levels K-P)
Fluent Readers (Reading A-Z levels Q-Z)
