Included here are the activities some of which you will be working on while we are studying Hating Alison Ashley. Some of these activities will be set as class work and others for homework. Meanwhile, if there is an activity you would like to do as an extension exercise, I would be more than happy to help out and mark it when it's finished. HATING ALISON ASHLEY By Robin Klein Some activities: Choose one or two activities for inclusion in portfolio (stage production evaluation to be included) 1. Erica is a hypochondriac. She is always using some illness as an excuse to get out of doing what she doesn’t want to do. Research and give a brief description of one of the illnesses she mentions. 2. Create a collage of magazine pictures, packaging, labels etc which illustrates the different eating habits OR homes of Erica and Alison. The collage will need a title, border and care with presentation etc. 3. Erica believes that the teacher, Miss Belmont, treats the students differently. If you believe that this is the case, why do you think this is so. Use examples from the story to illustrate you answer. 4. Imagine you could play a role in any movie. What role would it be and why would you want to play that role? 5. Erica’s relationships with Alison and Lennie change during the course of the novel. Explain how and why this comes about. 6. Did you enjoy the ending of the novel? Do you think it was an appropriate ending? Were all the conflicts or problems in the novel resolved or were there any unanswered questions? Explain. 7. Complete the grid for a character analysis by making notes about the various characters as the novel progresses. You will be asked to write about characters in more depth later. 8. Write a letter from Alison to one of her friends at her old school. 9. Construct a Find-a-word using Erica’s long list of medical conditions. Make sure the words are accurately spelt. 10. If you were to have a family like Erica’s or Alison’s, which would you choose? Why? 11. Prepare a flow chart to illustrate the sequence of events in the story. 12. Draw a cartoon illustrating an interaction between Miss Belmont and Barry Hollis. 13. Design a television commercial advertising the advantages of Barringa East Primary. 14. Apart from Alison and Erica who else does Robin Klein paint a vivid picture of? Discuss with examples. 15. Make a mandala for Alison and Erica using their names, suitable colours and images to express their characters. 16. In pairs, discuss the relative importance of clothes, homes and appearance to this story. 17. Could you identify with any character or parts of the story. If so how? 18. What suggestions would you give Alison about how to make some friends at her new school. 19. In groups of four, write a short play that you might present to the class. This may be your own idea or a part from the novel. It must have a script, and a beginning, middle and end. Rehearse your lines, create some simple props or costumes. Script ideas BLM attached 20. Read another book by Robyn Klein and write a review. 21. Imagine you are one of the characters from the novel. Write a diary entry based on something that happens to you in the novel. 22. Create an acrostic poem for one of the characters in the novel. (choose names out of hat to ensure all main characters are covered) 23. Add-a-scene - BLM 24.
