Class Description: The Multiple Disabilities Class is a self-contained classroom designed to serve students with a variety of disabilities who are unable to function in the general curriculum classes. Our goal is to focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities. Each student in the MD class has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), implemented by the IEP team and approved by the parents. We strive to meet the individual needs or our students and to help each student achieve his or her full potential. We offer individualized assistance in classwork, feeding, toileting, personal care and other needs as necessary.
Classwork: Our class is divided into three primary areas of classwork: Academics, Communication Skills, and Independent Living Skills. We have designated worktime for each of these subject areas. We will work on IEP Goals as well as functional skills. We will incorporate Art, Music, Computers and Recreation into our classwork. We also incorporate Social Skills into our daily routine. All of our work is done in class. There is never homework.
We are beginning a new program this year called MeMoves. MeMoves is designed especially for special needs students allowing them to view movements from DVD and try and copy the movements. There are both simple and advanced movements that target attention and focus. We will use this program during transition times.
Expectations: Each student is expected to participate as much as he or she can tolerate. Students are expected to participate in and complete requested classroom activities and tasks with accommodations and modifications as needed and designated by their IEPs.
Grading: Each student will receive a weekly percentage score in each subject area. Daily tasks will be scored consistently and averaged into a weekly score. The combined weekly scores will count as 25% of his or her grade for nine weeks grading period. A weekly participation grade will also be given. The combined participation grades will count as 25% of the grade. At the end of each grading period an assessment will be given that will count as 50% of the grade. The assessment will be very similar to the weekly practice, and student needs at the time of assessment will be taken into consideration. Each student will receive a Report Card as well as an IEP Progress Report at the end of each nine week grading period. Although we will score using percentage, that is only to measure progress accurately. Our students do not receive actual grades, but rather O =Outstanding, G= Good, S=Satisfactory, N= Needs Improvement, U=Unsatisfactory, INC=Incomplete
