The topic of this unit is the period between WWI and WWII.  It will include the new technology of the era, social changes like Prohibition, the Great Migration, and the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the causes of the Great Depression and aspects of the New Deal.



SOL Standard USII.5
The student will demonstrate knowledge of the social, economic, and technological changes of the early twentieth century by
a) Explaining how developments in transportation (including the use of the automobile), communication, and electrification changed American life.
b) Describing the social changes that took place, including Prohibition, and the Great Migration north.
c) Examining art, literature, and music from the 1920s and 1930s, emphasizing Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, and Georgia O'Keeffe and including the Harlem Renaissance.
d) Identifying the causes of he Great Depression, its impact on Americans, and the major features of FDR’s New Deal


Essential Questions:
1) How does the technology of this era drastically change the lives of Americans – both good and bad? How does it affect morals and social change?
2) How did the Dust Bowl, Great Migration, Depression and effects of the New Deal programs differ from White Americans and African Americans? Wealthy and poor?
3) The Harlem Renaissance served to raise the self esteem of an entire generation of African Americans. What do African Americans do with this newfound pride?


Today we will be practicing our vocabulary terms and knowledge of the unit by playing online games in class and for homework. Next class we will be taking an online quiz on the material studied.
