School Projects 2013-2014
The Ecology class has already completed two projects within the first three weeks of school.
We have perfected the fountain in the outside science study area. The new sump pump and piping worked beautifully.
The second school project was to remove weeds, trim trees, and mulch the corner in the front of the school. It looks sooooo great!
Class Activities 2013-2014:
Can you repeat that? (Pearson page 22 Environmental Science)
The students realized the difficult of writing instructions to replicate an experiment for public review. They did this by writing instructions to duplicate an unusual structure made from 10 objects. In some cases, it was hilarious to see the final structure built with student instructions.

School Projects 2011-2012
Baldwin and Grace Health Care
Students in ecology volunteer there time to visit the residents of Baldwin Nursing Home & Grace Health Care
A team in second period visited Ms. Elton's & Mr. Price’s classroom. The students used natural resources to create unique bird feeders.

A Team in first period visited Ms. Elton's Class and made a "HAND TREE"!
Everyone Enjoyed it!

A team os students in second period work with Ms. Peterson, Who is from ASD (Appalachian Sustainable Development),
to help clean and develop a trail between A.H.S. and E.B. Stanley.

Students Carved Pumpkins and presented them to Ms. Elton's Class. They Loved It!

Last years students in Mr Ahn's Biology class planted a potato patch at Abingdon High School.
This year some of the same students in Ms. Andis's ecology class harvested them. The cafeteria staff are planning to use the potato's in soup. The students are eagerly awaiting "Soup Day"! As we all know, fresh and home grown always taste the best!

Intra- School Projects:2009-2010
Some teams work with Mr.Price's class
In December 2009, the fifth period team helped make outdoor tree ornaments for Mr.Price's class. They used pine cones filled with peanut butter and rolled them in bird seeds to help feed the birds.Everyone had an enjoyable, educational experience.

Ecology Students Give Trail Presentation to Abingdon Recreational Committee
Posted on 10-05-2010 by Glenna Holmes (gholmes@wcs.k12.va.us)
Two girls standing in front of school lockers. Shannon H. and Najwa W., Abingdon High School ecology students who gave presentation to Abingdon Recreational Committee.
On September 26, 2010, two Abingdon High School students won the hearts of the members of the Abingdon Recreational Committee when they gave a presentation to the committee to ask for support in building a nature trail. This worthwhile project was initiated by Mrs. Andis’ ecology class. This nature trail will extend from Abingdon High School to E.B. Stanley Middle School, and it will be a continuation of the existing Coomes Center trail. The trail would serve as a biking/hiking trail and a picnic area for the public and students. At the meeting on September 26, the committee pledged to support the trail with in-kind donations in order to complete this endeavor.
"Mum's the Word" for Abingdon High School Ecology Students
Posted on 10-15-2009 by Glenna Holmes (gholmes@wcs.k12.va.us)
Ms. Andis' ecology students purchase twenty-four mums to add a bit of fall color.
The Abingdon High School ecology classes of Ms. Lisa Andis recently were asked for ideas in a project for school beautification. With autumn here and the leaves changing colors in the nearby mountains, the students decided to donate their "pocket change" in order to "splash" a little color on Abingdon High School! Thanks to the students, they donated enough money to buy twenty-four mums that were planted in front of the school, as well as around the new school message center!
Ecology Students Study Local Environment Issues
Posted on 09-08-2009 by Glenna Holmes (gholmes@wcs.k12.va.us)
Ecology students at Abingdon High School watch a recorded meeting of the Board of Supervisors discussing the Wyndale flooding situation.
The Abingdon High School ecology classes, taught by Lisa Andis, are studying various environmental issues of the past and present. During a period of time, they will study the following: Dominion Plant of Wise County, Brumley Gap vs. Appalachian Power Company, and the correlation between the IDA's industrial park and the flooding of the Wyndale community. Here you see students watching a recorded meeting of the August 25, 2009, Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting discussing the Wyndale flooding situation. This integrates components into the ecology studies that allow our students to experience the situations that are occurring in their local environment.
Intra-School Projects:2008-2009
A seventh period Ecology team meets with Mr.Price's class for ecological activities and crafts.
A fifth period Ecology team meets once a week with Mrs. Elton's Class for ecological activites and crafts.
Third period students visit Mrs.Elton's Class for fun educational weekday activities relating to Ecology. Everyone is having a GREAT time.
Community Projects:2007-2008 Grace Healthcare is a project that we have worked on for the past four years. Teams spend time with the residents talking and hearing stories about how the residents lived their lives.
Fourth and fifth period ecology classes assembled and distributed 110 "goodie-bags" to Grace for the Christmas holidays.
Inner-School Projects:
The second period ecology class brought materials to do "tie dye" shirts for the "Special Needs" class. We all had an enjoyable and learning experience.
Christmas and Cupcakes!!!!!!
The fifth period ecology class decorated christmas cupcakes with the "Special Needs" class. It was a fun and tasty experience.
Fifth period class brought materials needed to make outside Christmas decoration for the birds! We worked with the "Special Needs" class and everyone enjoyed the experience!
DEQ Projects:2007-2008 Students worked on an extensive project for DEQ (Department of Envrionmental Quality). They completed a Compact Disk of local birds showing habitat, diet, and scientific classification, that may be used in various governmental offices throughout the state of Virginia.
Students completed a Compact Disk of local tree and leaf identification. This will also be donated to DEQ to be used as a teaching tool. The students did their own photography for this project.
The classes created a variety of board games that are to be donated to DEQ. The games relate to environmental awareness which is an important asset to our ecosystem.
Below is a letter from Christine Smith, the Educator from DEQ for the State of Virginia.
Hello Lisa,
I wanted to thank you for giving your students the opportunity to create
such wonderful Environmental Education tools. These games and
presentations will be used throughout the State to aid me and other
educators in promoting environmental awareness. Your students did such
a wonderful job in creating activities that are correct (you'd be
surprised how many games that are out there with incorrect info), fun,
educational, creative, and well made. I plan to make them available for
use in WA County Learning Landscapes (Outdoor Classrooms) lessons and
for individual teacher check-out. I will use this classroom project at
teacher workshops to show other educators what kind of meaningful
lessons they can incorporate into everyday classroom learning that will
make all a lot more fun. Please let the students who created the
Virginia True or False activity know that I have already used their game
at Holston High School and the students really liked it. I am in the
process of playing each game (I have a great job!) so that I may use
them all with confidence. I also wanted to make sure you knew that your
students gave great presentations and conducted themselves
professionally while visiting the office.
Thank you for all of your great work! Please feel free to contact me
anytime you think DEQ could be of assistance to your efforts.

Below is a letter from Melissa Watson, who is affiliated with the Washington County Historical Society
Dear Lisa,
It was good to meet two of your students this morning and find out what a
great teacher you are. They seem to have really enjoyed this class and told
me they learned more on this project than any other class they had. That is
high praise from seniors!
The PowerPoint presentation is very professional and historically accurate.
They were very enthusiastic and I told them we could use more volunteer
workers like them, especially for field projects and computer related
projects. Please keep that in mind when assigning other projects for these
very talented seniors.
Finally, we feel strongly that this presentation could be used in either our
summer program or possibly in a class that we sponsor at the Higher
Education Center for the College for Older Adults. Ryan and Steven seemed
pleased with either or both of these outcomes. We will keep you updated as
to date and time for these events. We are very happy to see young people in
the community take an interest in their own history and please let us know
if we can help to that end.
In the meantime, we will keep the compact disc on site here in our library
for our more than 2,550 visitors a year to enjoy.
Let me thank you and say once again well done! Come see us and bring some of
those remarkable students!
Sincerely,
Melissa Abell Watson
