THIS WEBSITE SHOULD ANSWER MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS ON BLOCK SCHEDULING

What is it?

Block Scheduling involves effectively using school time by restructuring the school day so that students attend classes for longer periods or "blocks" of time throughout the year.  Block scheduling is usually done at the middle school or high school level where students change classes frequently.

Why we should change...

Traditionally students attend approximately 8 classes per school day for approximately 45 minutes per class period.  Much valuable time is spent in transition from one class to the next and getting settled once arriving to that class.

Block Scheduling would...

--allow students to attend 4 classes for 90 minutes per day for 1/2 of the school year.
--students would attend the other 4 classes in the second 1/2 of the school year.
--The 90 minute periods=more time on task because less time is spent in transition.
--teachers and students can do multiple activities within one class period.
--allow for more creative and cooperative learning which usually is difficult to achieve in a 45 minute period.
--less time needs to be spent on review of materials.
--it would improve school safety as most safety concerns arise when students are in transition from one class to the next.
