Common Threads Across The Arts AP English Project Introduction This year in AP English you will be required to do a research project which will combine your learned knowledge of literature, art, and music. These projects will be presented orally to the class. Task Your job will be to pick a writer from a particular time period, read select pieces of literature by that author, and then find art and music from the same period which can be compared and contrasted with the piece of literature. For example, you might choose to read some of the novels of Jane Austen from the Romantic Period, explore the art of Thomas Gainsborough, and listen to and learn about the music of Joahnnes Brahms. When you do the oral presentation, you must discuss the literature and use quotes to support your ideas, show examples of the art and discuss how it relates to the literature, and play samples of the music and discuss how it relates to the literature and art. You must also include a Works Cited slide on your powerpoint. Also, you must give me a CD and a printed copy of your powerpoint. (Check out the links below which were recommended by students.) Process and Resources Literature
Choose an author in a time period that you would like to know more about. You should read a number of works by the author in order to get an overall impression of his/her subject matter, writing style, themes, imagery, and tone. As you read the works, you should take good notes concerning these topics and highlight or copy any supporting quotes. Before you make a final decision about your author, use the print sources in the library and the internet to find out about his/her works. You will write a literary research paper on each work. When you do the oral presentation, you should incorporate quotes from each work that could also support the art and music. Art
After you reach an understanding of your author, you should begin your research on artists from the same time period. Try to find people whose works reflect the same subjects, styles, themes, images, and/or tones. Again, you will use the print sources in the library and the internet. Music
Based on the time period of the author you are reading, you should also begin to research the music of that period. Keep in mind that you are looking at subjects, styles, themes, images, and/or tones. This process also should be done in the library and on the internet. Evaluation I will be evaluating you based on the following rubric, keeping in mind your ideas on each person's subjects, styles, themes, images, and tones. Remember that the common threads are like the main idea in a paper. Late projects will lose 10 points a day. Literature Content (40%) Art Content (20%) Music Content (20%) Oral Presentation (20%) You must also turn in a copy of your CD and a print copy of the powerpoint, and an annotated bibliography. Please put the name of your author, artist, and musician on the first page of the annotated bibliography. *********************************************************** * AP Enrichment Project Dates Jan. 6 Thesis Jan. 13 First work read (paper due) Statement of proposed project (what you intend to do) Feb. 24 Second work read (paper due) Apr. 7 Complete list of works read (you should be finished reading the literature) (paper due) Apr. 15 Artist name Titles of works viewed Examples of works Apr. 27 Musician name List of works listened to May 1 List of art and music criticism sources May 10 Oral Presentations begin Annotated bibliography due with presentation (these dates may change)
