Our school theme for 2011-2012 is "Hope"

"The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him."        Pablo Casals

Hello First Grade Parents and Students,
May is a very busy month in First Grade and the boys and girls come to school every day excited and ready to learn. We are working hard to complete all we need to do, before we reach the end of the school year.
May is the month when we take time to honor Mary, our Blessed Mother. We will discuss Mary’s role as Jesus’ mother and  learn how the church honors Mary. The classes will take turns bringing in flowers to decorate the prayer table in the front hall.
In Math we are finishing the chapter on subtraction of two digit numbers and we are ready to learn about fractions. Please continue to review the homework with your child, and also the class-work that is returned to you each Friday. The students need to practice  flash cards, addition and subtraction math facts to 20,  with you every day.
In Science we will be planting seeds and recording their growth rate.  We are also learning about Reducing , Recycling and Reusing; look for the student posters in the hall and classroom. This month we are going on our last field trip. We will go to The Abby Sobrato Center for Science and Sustainability at Walden West. We will be learning about different environments and habitats.
The students have now completed their writing project "The Story of My Life " and we are all enjoying listening to the stories, as the boys and girls each present their project to the class. I am very proud of all the boys and girls and know they all worked hard to create this wonderful project.

ORANGE HOMEWORK FOLDER – Please check the orange folder every day for your student’s homework assignments, announcements or permission slips. The folder should be returned to school the following morning with your child’s completed homework and any forms or notes for the school. Homework is given daily Monday through Thursday and is due the following day. There is no homework over the weekend.
RED MAKE-UP FOLDER- this is for work missed if the student is absent due to illness or an appointment. The student has the same number of days to hand the work in as they were absent. The folder can be picked up at the end of the day by a sibling or parent if requested in advance. If not picked up, then the student takes the work home in the red folder when they return to school.
WATER - Please send in a large full bottle of water with your student every day. P.E. is on Tuesday and Thursday and they take their water bottles with them. Please mark your child’s name on the bottle with a sharpie if it is a popular brand of water! The students can also refill their bottles at the water fountains during recess or lunch.
SNACK AND LUNCH– Please send in a healthy snack for morning recess and a healthy lunch every day. The students are always hungry by recess and lunchtime. You may also want to send in enough for them to have a small snack after school. A snack should always be sent on a Friday even if you have ordered pizza lunch.
SLEEP - Please encourage your children to go to bed on time every night and to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning, it really does make a difference. Establish a regular time for going to bed as it is very hard for them to learn and enjoy school when they are tired.
