Our school theme for 2011-2012 is "Hope" "The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him." Pablo Casals Hello First Grade parents and students, February is a very busy month in First Grade. We have many exciting events taking place at St Clare School and also in our community. We started with Open House when many of our students and parents visited the First Grade class room and then toured the school. It was nice to invite the parents in to our room to look at all the wonderful projects the students have on display. We also met many families who are interested in sending their children to Saint Clare School. In February we are celebrating Black History Month and the students will find out when and why Black History Month occurs. We will learn and write about some famous African Americans. Our 100th day of school finally arrived and the boys and girls had a lot of fun creating their “100 Day Project”. We all enjoyed their individual presentations and the question and answer sessions that followed. On February 2nd we celebrated Groundhog Day and learned that “Punxsutawney Phil” saw his shadow. So, we will have six more weeks of winter! We are also celebrating Chinese New Year 2012, the year of the Dragon, The Kindergarten students look lovely in their costumes and the Dragon Dance was very exciting. In class we have made dragons and lanterns which the students decorated with Chinese symbols and characters. The lanterns are now hanging in the classroom. Valentine’s Day is coming soon and the students are looking forward to our Valentine’s Day party when we will share Valentine Cards with our classmates and families. This is a perfect opportunity to tell our friends and families how much they mean to us. First Grade will have a field trip to Deer Hollow Farm this month and we are busy learning about animals and their habitats before we go so that our field trip will be even more fun. The theme for the trip is “Fleece and Milk”. Yes, February is a busy month full of fun and learning. Please make sure your child has a good night of sleep and a good breakfast so they can participate fully in our school day. Remember to send your students to school with a large bottle of water and a healthy snack and lunch every day. It is very cold every morning so the children should wear a warm jacket every day, over their sweatshirt, as we are outside for assembly and our morning walk. Thank you for all of your support. The folder should be returned to school the following morning with your child’s completed homework and any forms or notes for the school. Homework is given daily Monday through Thursday and is due the following day. There is no homework over the weekend. RED MAKE-UP FOLDER- this is for work missed if the student is absent due to illness or an appointment. The student has the same number of days to hand the work in as they were absent. The folder can be picked up at the end of the day by a sibling or parent if requested in advance. If not picked up, then the student takes the work home in the red folder when they return to school. WATER - Please send in a large full bottle of water with your student every day. P.E. is on Tuesday and Thursday and they take their water bottles with them. Please mark your child’s name on the bottle with a sharpie if it is a popular brand of water! The students can also refill their bottles at the water fountains during recess or lunch. SNACK AND LUNCH– Please send in a healthy snack for morning recess and a healthy lunch every day. The students are always hungry by recess and lunchtime. You may also want to send in enough for them to have a small snack after school. A snack should always be sent on a Friday even if you have ordered pizza lunch. SLEEP - Please encourage your children to go to bed on time every night and to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning, it really does make a difference. Establish a regular time for going to bed as it is very hard for them to learn and enjoy school when they are tired.
