Welcome to Journalism at Attleboro High School
This course will teach you the fundamentals of writing for a newspaper, improve your grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, introduce you to the concept of online publishing, explain constructive peer editing (you'll be an expert at proofreading symbols), allow you to analyze articles written by other high school students, and begin to teach you the ART of putting a paper "to bed."

Assignments and deadlines will usually be posted on this site, so if you're absent check this site for homework. I suggest you "bookmark" the site address now before you forget it. Please note that I usually only post long-term assingments or very important ones. See me for the day to day ones.
This is a fast-paced, informative, and productive trimester course. I hope you enjoy it.
Introduction to Journalism: syllabus handed out; this web site explored; introductory discussions re students' ideas about journalism including ethics; introduction to Journalism Today, the class textbook, discussion of current news (check out the Sun Chronicle, the New York Times , and the Boston Globe: all can be found online or as hard copies in the school library if you do not have access at home).
Watch the news or listen to it at least once daily.
There will be a pretest and a post-test using Quia, so become familiar with the site. Check out the links and activities below for more information. If you find a link is broken, please tell the teacher and if possible find the new site (extra credit!). :-) Stylequizzes will be given weekly. Don't forget to complete them on your own. You may use the Stylequiz manual in the textbook or the AP Stylebook.
Approximately every week Ken Ross (kross@thesunchronicle.com), from The Sun Chronicle, will ask a question for "The Page" that you will answer prior to Sunday evening, preferably by Friday of that week. When you send the answer to Ken (cc the teacher), it MUST be spellchecked and written with professionalism. No lower case proper nouns or texting abbreviations are allowed. Please be sure to include your full name, the school you attend, and your grade with ANY email sent to Ken. ALL emails sent to anyone outside of this classroom MUST be cc'd to the teacher.
Trimester Journalism
The class will usually follow this schedule:
News You Can Use: Students will read the daily newspaper and complete the assignment on the easel
Mini-Lesson : the lesson of the day could be a presentation by an editor, the teacher or a textbook assignment.
Independent Work: Students will write their articles for the school newspaper, the Eagle's Eye. They may leave the room to interview students (cafeteria), teachers, administrators, or other people in the building. Once the research is gathered, they are to write the article using appropriate format (Times New Roman, font size 12 for the body). A photograph with a caption and attribution must accompany the article when it is completed. Students may use the school camera or their phone if it is a high enough quality.
