Computer Applications Architectural Design Unit
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to have the students learn the design process, develop a floor plan, and create a drawing using AutoCAD Architectural Desktop.
Goal: Each student will develop a floor plan and produce a drawing on CAD Software
Methodology: The students will engage in several activities to reach their goal.
1. Group work research
A. The class will be divided into teams. Each team must go to their individual residences and measure their assigned rooms and the contents of that room.
B. The teams will research on the internet the sizes of furniture and appliances.
C. The teams will then cut out of paper boxes and shapes representing furniture, and fixtures found in their room.
D. The class will then go to the cafeteria to layout each of their rooms within a given amount of space.
E. Each group will produce a Microsoft Word document detailing the sizes of the rooms they worked on and all the objects in their rooms.
F. Each group will produce a Microsoft Word document detailing the sizes of the furniture and appliances.
2. Individual research. Each student is to research on the internet different floor plan designs. As the students find plans that they like, they are to make quick sketches of these plans for future reference.
3. Individual Design Phase
A. The students will be given a list of minimum and maximum standards for their floor plan design. These requirements will be different for regular and honors classes. See list of requirements.
B. Brainstorming Sketches: The students will work individually to produce two different sketches (not to scale) representing their brainstorming and research for a floor plan. This is to be done on 8-1/2” X 11” white paper.
C. The students will produce a proportional sketch taken from one of the two brainstorming sketches. This sketch will have the approximate room sizes indicated with the total square footage for living space.
D. The students will produce a ¼” = 1’ scale sketch on graph paper of their floor plan.
4. Drawing Phase:
A. Introduction to AutoCAD architectural desktop and the commands that they will commonly use.
B. Produce 3D drawing of their floor plan.
Time Frame:
1. Group work research January 8 – 18
2. Individual research January 16-23 (this is done as time permits)
3. Individual Design Phase
a.Individual Research (students are to find and sketch rooms they like from floor plans found on the internet.) January 22-25.
b. Brainstorming Sketches January 25-28
c. Proportional Sketches January 29-30
d. 1/4 “=1’ scale sketch January 31 – February 8
e. Begin working on AutoCAD February as students finish working on the graph paper. Graph paper due no later than Feb. 12.
4. AutoCAD Phase
Feb. 13-14: Introduction to Architectural Desktop
Feb. 15-18 Begin drawing Floor Plan on computer. CAD Progress grade.
Week of Feb. 18: Classes are to work on their projects as time permits due to TAAS testing.
Feb. 25 – Continue working on floor plans. As students get ready, demonstrate dimensioning. Students must show instructor their floor plans on the screen before printing.
Feb. 28 – March 1: Progress check. Looking for all walls, doors, windows, fixtures.
March 4 – March 8: Finish drawings. All drawings must be printed out and turned in for a grade by the end of the week. For students that finish early we will begin working with 3D Studio Viz as a fill until Spring Break.
