Kindergarten Kindergarteners read the book, "The Mitten" and painted giant mittens in art. For the month of February, they painted "Valentine Cats" with patterns and heart noses. First Grade First graders painted "Sweater People" in January. Their mitten patterns had to match the painted patterns on their sweaters. The faces look very much like the students themselves. For the month of February, they painted "Valentine Cats" with painted patterns on the cat bodies and heart noses. Second Grade Second graders are in the middle of studying China. In art, they are learning how to paint in a Chinese style with light and dark values of black and gray. They have complete a Chinese "Funky Monkey", a "Panda" with bamboo, and they are now painting a "Crane". Their last project will be a Chinese landscape. Third Grade Third graders are celebrating Black History month by creating "Jazz Collages in the style of the African-American artist, Romare Bearden. They saw a video about his life and his work and learned about his interest and abilities in music, sports, and art. Fourth Grade Fourth graders have just completed a winter landscape using cut and torn paper and paint sumulating white birch trees. Their landscapes illustrate their knowledge of foreground, middleground and background. They are beginning a new project in honor of Black History month. They are learning about the quilt codes used by escaping slaves in the Underground Railroad and they will be creating their own quilt square and their own quilt code to be used in a class quilt. Fifth Grade Fifth graders have completed a winter landscape in which they printed trees using cardboard, sponges and paint and added details with black marker. This project illustrates foreground, middleground and background and leads into a more in-depth study of one-point perspective. Mrs. Brust's Class Mrs. Brust's children are busy making many different projects. They have just completed making winter Valentine hats which they painted with patterns. They made a Valentine project to take home to their parents. Mrs. Mick's Pre-School Mrs. Mick's pre-schoolers have been doing a lot of sponging, printing, cutting and pasting. They just completed a painted mitten project. They also have made large hearts in pinks and reds, and sponge painted and glued smaller hearts.
