February 5, 2002 READING We have been focusing on identifying topics and detail in our reading selections. We are leaning how to take notes. We have been making T-charts for our notes with the headings "Topic", "Details" and "Connections". We have read many nonfiction texts about famous Americans and put them in our T-charts and notes. We continue to read in our chapter books, work on dictionary skills, and researching! WRITING We have been working on "how-to" writing. Last week, Stephen Shearer, a writing specialist from the district, came and demonstrated a lesson for the teachers. We read a book about how to be a good reader. We organized our thoughts on this subject and began writing a shared-writing composition about how to be a good reader. We reviewed our punctuation rules, and continue to daily edit and journal write frequently. SPELLING Our list contained words with the long a pattern ay. We learned two new content words, Sunday and Friday, and several high frequency words. MATH We continue to solve two-digit addition and subtraction story problems. We use the strategy called QDPAC. To QDPAC, we identify the question, list and circle the data, decide on a plan, solve to find the answer, and check our work using the opposite operation. We practiced identifying the key words that let us know when to add and subtract. We practiced Mad Minutes, and are now in the telling time unit of study. We can tell time to the minute! Please help them by asking them for a time check. SOCIAL STUDIES The students are enjoying our study about famous Americans, and are doing a great job writing their reports. ******If you have any board games at home that you are no longer using, we would love to have them at school to use during rainy day recesses. *******Progress reports will be sent home on Wednesday, February 6th. ********Western Day will be Friday 8th. The Talent Show will be at 10:55 in the cafeteria during our lunch period. We will be square dancing during our specials block in the cafeteria from 12:55-1:55. ยบ
