Welcome to Our Lady of Perpetual Help's first grade website. I'm Pam Bartko, 1st grade teacher, and I've enjoyed 17 magnificent years at OLPH. As a teacher and life coach, my goal under the patronage of Our Lady, is to foster spiritual and academic growth and to develop appropriate behavioral skills that will help children lead happy, balanced, and Christ centered lives.
Attitude of Gratitude
I want to thank all of you wonderful parents for helping us get off to such a great start. Supplies have been purchased, items are labeled, and children are arriving at school on time. School forms are being returned, notes about changes in after school transportation and activities are being promptly given to me in the morning, and homework is being returned on time. WOW!!!!
Just a Thought
In the beginning of the school year we spend time reviewing content. Sometimes this may appear unnecessary; however, we do have a spiraling curriculum. This means that we review, build, and enrich. This is a very strong approach to learning. This also gives children time to adjust to a new school year and a sense of confidence.
Looking Ahead
In Religion we are learning about creation and how we are made in God's image: we can think, choose, and love. You can enjoy some interesting activities on www.FaithFirst.com which is the RCL website.
In Math we are starting Chapter 2 Addition. You can visit the Education Place at www.eduplace.com/kids to review the concepts taught in Chapter 1 or work on some practice activities for the present chapter.
In Reading /Phonics we will be working on medial and final consonants, short vowels, classification, cause/effect, reality/fantasy, nouns, verbs, and simple sentences.
In Science and Social Studies we will be starting units on apples, seasons, and trees.
In Conclusion
Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.
