Basic Portuguese: Lesson One

We shall start by learning some basic words (palavras basicas) to help with simple everyday politeness and courtesy.

I am using the Travlang site for European Portuguese though there is also a Brazilian Portuguese site if you wish to check out the differences in pronunciation. Click on the red and green flag marked portugues. For Brazilian Portuguese, click on the green flag.

Objectives

To say, listen and understand, read, write, words and small phrases for:
yes, no, thankyou very much, you're welcome, please, excuse me, hello, goodbye, so long, good morning, good afternoon, good evening.

Lesson plan

First read the words while listening to the relevant audio clip. It is best to hear first so that you fix the sound of the words as you read. Listen, read. Listen ,say. Listen, copy word or phrase in own handwriting. Read and say. Check again with the audio clip and correct your pronunciation if necessary. If necessary write the sound you hear to remind you of the pronunciation.

When you have done this with all words and phrases in the first section, try the Quia games to check and reinforce learning.

The Travlang quiz will test your knowledge of every one of the words and phrases used in this section. My Quia URL, however, is just checking your knowledge of the very first section.

Remember, little but often.

You may find that you remember very easily to begin with because of the excitement and novelty of learning and succeeding in learning a new language. This is a bonus.

REMEMBER Always practise by reciting the words and phrases aloud after listening and reading. Use them, even if you have to talk to yourself. Whenever you say thankyou in English, repeat to yourself quietly obrigado , or if you are a lady, obrigada, the
female adjective ending.

This will be explained in more detail later
