This program provides basic instruction for students with no previous auto repair experience. This class will provide instruction in Virginia's Workplace Readiness Skills and apply Virginia's All Aspects of Industry elements. The class will explore practical experience in minor automobile repair and maintenance, simplified body panel repair and refinishing, rust repair by various means, and an introduction to MIG welding. Primer/sealers, enamel refinishing with single and two-stage base/clear coat finish is practiced. Students also will be introduced to aspects of the auto repair industry as a future career along with work habits that will be expected to exhibit in future advanced classes and the workplace. The class is offered to students from the four Washington County, Virginia high schools, specifically 9th grade students. Attendance is required on a daily basis. Shop safety and good work habits are stressed with safety glasses a requirement in the shop setting. The class is a hands-on experience in the workshop. The format includes classwork, periodic required homework, and tests to check progress. Shop work is introduced as the student becomes familiar with the requirements of the class, can demonstrate their knowledge of the various hand tools, specialized equipment and the automobile, and exhibit a readiness to accomplish the physical repair work.
