December News
This month our lessons will focus on:
Reading - We are reading the book, Hoot by Carl Hiassen. It is a fictional piece where the children work to preserve their native Florida environment. We will be writing responses to the book to demonstrate comprehension, draw conclusions and make inferences.
Spelling - Our wordlist will focus on words with suffixes.
Grammar - We are finishing our unit on nouns and we will have a test. Our next unit is on verbs.
Math - We are beginning chapter 4 which focuses on computation using fractions, decimals and percents and the four operations. We will continue practicing explaining our mathematical thinking by problem solving.
Social Studies - Most of us have taken our booklets home on Latin America which demonstrate the research skills we have been practicing. We are focusing on writing informational essays in preparation for sixth grade assessment.
Library - We are preparing three topics for research for sixth grade assessment. We locate books, encyclopedias, and websites that would support our topics. One of these topics will be for sixth grade assessment in early January 2010.
Science - We will be beginning our next unit, Earth's Changing Surface. We will investigate the internal and external forces that shape our planet.

Franklin Institute – Field Trip
March 31st
The students will be traveling to the Franklin Institute to take part in their Changing Earth exhibit and workshop. Sixth Grade Class Trip to Philadelphia Sports Club @ Highpoint, Chalfont
Friday, June 11, 2010 (all classes) all day
Students and chaperones will participate in many activities: walleyball, jousting, ropes course, hockey, basketball, laser tag, tennis, etc. Lunch will be a pizza party at the picnic area, and students will have class t-shirts to wear on this day of fun and exercise. More information will follow. Watch for permission slips and chaperone requests in May.
DATES TO BE DETERMINED
DARE Graduation
Parents are invited to come and watch this ceremony that celebrates your child’s graduation from DARE. More information will follow on a separate invitation once our date has been determined.
Trip to Holicong Middle School
In the spring all sixth-grade classes will be taking a trip to Holicong Middle School to tour the school and meet the principals and counselors. We will pass the date along as soon as this trip is scheduled. This trip will last all morning.
Sixth Grade Farewell Celebration – Last FULL day of school
This date will be scheduled & distributed following all snow days
This is an end-of-year ceremony held at Cold Spring Elementary on the night of the LAST FULL DAY OF SCHOOL from 6:00-7:30 p.m. to recognize all sixth graders and wish them well as they move on to middle school. This will be a "dressy" occasion to fit the importance of the ceremony.
Sixth Grade Breakfast & Yearbook Signing
This is held at Cold Spring Elementary on the last day of school, 9:00-11:00 a.m. Students will be served a catered breakfast and provided with some relaxed time to "hang out" with friends and get yearbooks signed. What a great way to say goodbye for the summer!
