Course Description
The practical nursing program is two years in length, with a new class beginning at the first of school each year. The first year of the program is one-half day in length, in order to accommodate high school seniors. The second year of the program consists of a full day clinical experience or one full day in the classroom. Upon completion of the program, the student is awarded a school pin and a certificate of completion and is eligible to take the practical nurse licensure examination.
Pre-Clinical Objectives
THE STUDENT WILL:
1. Develop the understanding of the history of nursing, legal /ethical principles, nursing organizations, healthcare system.
2. Gain knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology of the human body.
3. Gain skill and understanding of pharmacology and drug therapy.
4. Develop the understanding of nutrition and diet therapy.
5. Gain skill and understanding of nursing skills performed by the licensed practical nurse.
6. Develop the ability to communicate therapeutically with the client.
Clinical Objectives
THE STUDENT WILL:
1. Develop the ability to apply principles to actual situations.
2. Gain knowledge, understanding and skills in giving nursing care to patients with medical and surgical conditions.
3. Gain knowledge and skill in the care of the normal healthy child and the child with health problems.
4. Gain skill and understanding of the nursing care needs of the emotionally disturbed and mentally ill.
5. Develop the ability to care for the obstetrical patient with skill and understanding.
6. Develop the ability to give efficient care to the normal newborn
baby.
7. Develop the ability to identify and solve problems in selected nursing situations.
8. Gain knowledge in growth and development in the life span.
9. Gain an understanding in the preparation for an interview.
10. Gain licensure to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse through taking and passing the State Board Examination.
