Vocabulary:
We will be finishing the last unit in the Vocabulary Workshop books (Unit 15) this week.  The work will be due on Wednesday, May 8th and the test will be on Thursday, May 9th.  After that, we will be completing the cumulative review units in the back of the workbook in order to prepare for the last final exam.

Reading/Writing:
We have just finished reading the novel Jacob Have I Loved and have had several reading activities to explore this novel more fully.  Students have been and will continue to be writing in order share their responses to the themes and concepts presented in the novel and to demonstrate their understanding of the material covered.  Students have been assigned an essay which will be due on Tuesday, May 7th.  They have been given class time to work on this essay, which involves analyzing one of the major themes in the novel, and comparing/contrasting this theme with one of the related stories or poems at the end of the novel.  The essay is worth 200 points, and will be graded for grammar, usage, mechanics, effective word choice, elaboration, support for assertions given, and the level of critical thinking displayed in discussing the novel.  The final essay test for Jacob Have I Loved will be given on Thursday, May 9th.  During this test, students will be allowed to use their novel and any notes to answer the questions, and may bring their tests home to work on.  The test will be due on Monday, May 13th when students walk into the classroom door.  After this, we will practice more writing strategies before the school year is over in order to prepare students for the eight grade more fully.  We will cover how to improve writing through the use of "voice" and effective word choice.

It's a busy few weeks, but the good news is, it's almost over!
