PRACTICE TAKS TESTS AVAILABLE

Go to: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/resources/release/taks/index.html to find released TAKS tests to practice with. (See link below) Answer keys are also available. If the ELA essay is an area your student needs to improve, check out the link to the "Scoring Guide". It gives examples of essays that score a 1, 2, 3, or 4 and explains why they are scored that way.

These are the testing dates for the junior TAKS tests:

ELA- March 5

AUDIOBOOKS ONLINE

There is a link at the bottom of this page to a website that has digital recordings of novels, etc. that are public domain. These books or individual chapters can be downloaded and put on an ipod or mp3 player too. Some of the ones our English classes are reading are Scarlet Letter, Red Badge of Courage, Frankenstein, Huck Finn, Beowulf, The Awakening, Gulliver's Travels, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

FREE SOFTWARE FOR READPLEASE.COM

This is a free software program that never expires! It will read with computer generated voices anything that can be copied and pasted into a new file. The voices are pretty good and the speed and font size can be adjusted. There is a very reasonably priced upgraded version that you can download and use free for 30 days without entering any credit card information. It opens up to a full screen (the free version does not expand to a full screen)and has some other additional features. HINT: Copy and paste from Sparknotes.com. Also some Sparknotes have the full text if they are older than 75 years. You can find the full text after choosing a chapter. The link for the full text is at the top of the chapters screens. See the link for Readplease.com at the bottom of this page to try it out.
