Here you can see what assignments were given each day, if there were any quizzes lately that you may have missed, and if any tests or projects are coming up soon. You can also practice our vocabulary using activities that I create and post, doing online "flashcards," matching games, word searches, and more. Use this website as a tool as you learn!
5 septiembre (jueves) : turn in HW from yesterday (list of verbs you can remember from Spanish 1) using the red box on the front table, get the reference packet, the song packet, the 50 verb list, and the cultural experience assignment from the front table. Go over those requirements. Get the class expectations packet as well and discuss. HW = 1) complete pp. 3 and 4 of the expectations packet, and 2) study the first 25 of the verbs for a RECOGNITION/ matching quiz that we'll have on Tuesday.
6 septiembre (viernes) : get official seats today, meet your new neighbors, turn in homework to red box, take Spanish 2A pretest today, discuss the CULTURAL EXPERIENCE PROJECT a little more, and listen to the first song in our song packet ("Fotografía" by Juanes and Nelly Furtado). HW = study the first 25 verbs for our TUESDAY QUIZ.
Culture project --> get out into the community and experience Hispanic culture! Take a photo of yourself at the experience, and get that to me, along with a note from Mom or Dad verifying that you didn't just photoshop yourself into a scene. This weekend's opportunity: SATURDAY -- noon til 11 pm in downtown Grand Rapids at the Calder plaza --> Hispanic Festival 2013!
9 septiembre (lunes): word of the day: cazador (hunter). share weekend doings IN SPANISH with a "¿qué hiciste?" help sheet. Practice the verbs on tomorrow's quiz. Listen for a second time to "Fotorafía," filling in blanks. Look at our new vocab list for this week, found on p.2 of the NEW PACKET that we get today. HW = study those first 25 verbs for our Tuesday quiz.
10 septiembre (martes): phrase of the day: "Hacer lo que quieres es libertad; que te guste lo que haces es felicidad" [Doing what you want is freedom; liking what you do is happiness" REVIEW HOW BASIC PRESENT TENSE VERBS WORK using p.4 of the new packet (do #1-12 for written homework). Learn gestures for the new vocab on p.2; TAKE first verb quiz today! HW= complete p.4 #1-12, start studying the next 25 verbs for a quiz NEXT Tuesday, and watch the president's address tonight at 9pm if you can!
11 septiembre (miércoles) - word of the day= perdona (forgive). go over p. 4, discuss the president's speech and the Syrian crisis a little, fill in ALL the blanks in Fotografía, underlining the infinitives. Look at -er and -ir verbs in the present tense. HW = study p.2 vocab and complete p.5
12 septiembre: Share good news in our lives (for participation points), correct p. 5 (reviewing present tense -er and -ir verbs), play name games to get to know classmates better. Review the gestures of p.2 vocab. HW= DO all of p. 2 (read the story, answer the questions, noting that beginning with question 8 the questions are now about YOU), and study the p.2 vocabulary for a Friday quiz.
13 septiembre: Share good news, word of the day = rosa; correct p.2 homework, practice vocab more, work on student names. HW for Monday = p.6 and STUDY THE second side of the 25 verb sheet for TUESDAY's quiz on those.
Remember this weekend is the Tulipanes Latino Film Festival in Holland, and the Mexican Independence Day celebration downtown GR (on the Calder plaza).
16 septiembre: word of the day= pulgada (inch). Share weekend happenings, do some sentence building using the p.2 vocab from last week, correct p. 6 (reviewing basics of present tense verb endings). LOOK AT SHOE VERBS or stem-changing verbs today (listed on p.7). HW = complete p. 8 USING shoe verbs in each blank, and KEEP STUDYING those second 25 verbs for Tuesday's verb quiz.
17 septiembre: word of the day: equilibrio (balance), practice next 25 verbs, share good news in Spanish, take quiz on second 25 verbs, practice names (quiz Friday)... tonight's homework= make sure you have p.8 done as well as you can, and read chapter 2 in "Casi se muere", writing down 5 things you learn about Chile.
18 septiembre: word of the day = we did 4 translations for today's warm up, using shoe verbs. Look at the destruction in Colorado and in Mexico from heavy rains, share good news, correct the top of p.8 together, learning better how shoe verbs work. Read chapter 2 together, and look at some photos from Chile. HW= read chapter 3 for the first time, adding to your list of things you are learning about Chile.
19 septiembre: word of the day - naufragar = to shipwreck. Share good news, play the name game and take our name quiz. HW-- general studying.
20 septiembre: word of the day = kilometros por hora (kph). Look at a new train coming in Japan, share good news, review p.2 vocabulary with more sentences to translate, take vocabulary quiz on p.2 vocab, and read more of Chapter 3 of "Casi se muere" together. HW = get to Artprize if you can, and have a great weekend. Keep studying Spanish vocab each day! (especially those shoe verbs).
23 septiembre: word of the day= abandonada. Share weekend news, do top 7 on p.10, correct more of shoe verb work on p.8, learn gestures for new vocab on p. 16. Read half of p.3 story in class. HW = read the rest of the p.3 story and be ready for a basic quiz on what happens. (5 pts max)
24 septiembre: word of the day = no te preocupes! (Don't worry). Share good news, read the rest of p.3 together, review/practice the new vocab on p.16. HW = STUDY the p.16 vocab.
NOTE: First test of the tri coming on Tuesday, 1 October. Will be over p.2 and p.16 vocab, including the p.3 story and knowing the basics of how present tense verbs work, including shoe verbs.
25 septiembre: words of the day= Primero (first) después (afterwards). Share good news, finish reviewing shoe verbs on p. 7-8, review p.16 vocabulary together with gestures, then act/tell a story using it! Thank you Brennan, Emily, and Luke 1st hour and Connor and Brooke (and Tyler) in 5th hour! HW = STUDY the p.16 vocab more.
26 septiembre: word of the day = "Orquesta" = orchestra. Share good news, listen to the song "Vivir mi vida" and figure out all the infinitives, finish the p.16 acting story from yesterday, and/or create new one(s) with partners. HW for all classes = study p.16 vocabulary, and complete p.16 (read the story well and answer the 11 questions).
27 septiembre: word of the day= "fotobombardear"= to photo bomb. review vocab, read many student stories from Thursday, take vocab quiz on p.16 vocab. HW= study!

2 octubre: word of the day = falta de acuerdo = lack of agreement. Get new seats, share good news, discuss good meals in Spanish, study p.10 and 12 food vocab. HW = make flashcards for your p.10 food vocab and your p.12 food vocab as well. We'll get our tests back on Thursday!
3 octubre: word of the day = la vida cotidiana = everyday life. Share good news and a chiste, review food vocab flashcards, get our tests back and CORRECT our mistakes. Make flashcards for the rest of the food vocabulary on p.12. HW= complete p.13 and p.14
4 octubre: no word of the day... do 4 sentence translations instead. Share joke of the day and good news, review p.13 vocab, p.11 and 12 food vocab with cards and with sandwich creations. HW = STUDY THE FOOD VOCAB (see link below as well for online flashcards) and keep studying for a retake of our last test if it did not go well for you.
You will have ONE WEEK to try a retake if the test did not go well for you, and I will average the two grades together. LET ME KNOW when you plan to come in to GO OVER YOUR FIRST TEST with me, and then take the retake, either before or after school.

8 octubre 2013 -- word of the day = medio lleno (half full) and medio vacío (half empty). share good news, review / reteach the present participles in Spanish (-ando and -iendo), review vocabulary from Monday, watch video and do partner worksheet working on food vocab and our listening skills. HW = complete p.20 and study pp. 11-12-13 for our WEDNESDAY QUIZ. some English to Spanish, some Spanish to English.
9 octubre 2013 -- word of the day = llevar (to carry or wear or bring). Share good news, review food vocab, credit for p. 20 homework, listen to the song "Bailar" by Jarabe de Palo 2 times, take 26 point food quiz from pages 11-12. HW = STUDY vocab on p. 23... we'll have a quiz on that on Friday.
11 octubre 2013 -- share good news, correct p. 25 top 1/2, review the 2 past tenses and vocab, talk about the arrival of C. Columbus and the celebration of Columbus Day / Día de la Raza/ Día de la Hispanidad. Today's quiz will be moved to MONDAY over the p.23 vocabulary. HW= complete p.26 carefully and THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN COOK AND BRING to class next Friday for our food day!
14 octubre 2013 -- share good news, word of the day= escarabajo (beatle). share good news, plan Friday's food day a bit with a sign up sheet. Take vocabulary quiz from last week's vocab p.23, including a few words from the "Bailar" song. Review the two past tenses, from p. 24 and correct p.26 (worth 20 points). HW= do the page 33B (top 1/2) and p.32B.
15 octubre 2013 -- word of the day = palta/aguacate (avocado), share good news, watch the "Pan" video, and learn the gestures for p.31 vocabulary. HW = complete p. 35 and study the p.31 vocabulary.
16 octubre 2013 -- words of the day = yate de lujo (luxury yacht) and tifón (Typhoon). Share good news, correct p. 35 and 33B (top 1/2) Learn how the YO form of some preterit verbs needs a small spelling change (p.33B bottom). Review vocabulary p.31 and get new song paper for song "Volver." HW = MEMORIZE the preterit verb endings for -ar and -er/-ir verbs, and complete p. 34 for 20 points.
Remember... food day on Friday to celebrate Hispanic culture! Helping with the party in some way is worth participation points... cooking something Hispanic that you bring in and share with us can be worth up to 15 extra credit points!
17 octubre -- word of the day = camuflaje (camouflage) share good news, review preterit verb endings and this week's vocab, play the 3 actions game to learn vocab better. HW - study p.31 vocab and bring something wonderful for our food day Friday.
18 octubre -- Celebramos! no word of the day.
21 octubre -- share good news, word of the day = navaja (knife or switchblade), review vocab, read p. 31 and p. 32 story, take vocab quiz for 10 points. HW = p. 33 top 1/2
22 octubre -- phrase of the day = "el pez más grande nunca pescado" (the biggest fish ever caught!), discuss good things, review the TWO past tenses and their endings, correct p. 33 vocab homework, watch the "Excusas" video 2 x, listening for the two different past tenses as the student makes excuses for not having her homework done. HW = on p.31B, titled "El cuento de Bob; El Hombre que Quería Viajar a España" -- READ the story well and, using either 2 different colors, or underlines for one tense and circles for the other tense, mark each past tense verb used in the story.
The PRETERIT verbs happened ONCE or a LIMITED # of times. Bam! Endings usually look like -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron AND -í, iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.
the IMPERFECT verbs either just WERE, or they USED TO BE or happened HABITUALLY. Endings usually are -ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían for -er/-ir verbs, or -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban for -ar verbs.
23 octubre -- check the Bob story, get papers back, check grades, word of the day = "densa nube de esmog" (dense cloud of smog); conferences tonight. Get packet that goes with the Excusas video -- do the pre-viewing pages (pp1-2) and then fill in p5 while watching the video one more time. HW - complete p.6, answering the questions in complete sentences.
24 octubre -- credit for p.6, correct it, word of the day = "Cofradía mundial" (world-wide brotherhood), learn how to log in to the www.senorwooly.com website, using Mr. Gelder's class code. HW = sign up, log in, attach yourself to my class, and watch the Excusas video, maybe trying the GAME to help you review the lyrics.
TEST FRIDAY -- (small one) -- study p.31 vocabulary, the EXCUSAS song, and make sure you can conjugate verbs in the PRETERIT tense (p.24, pp. 33B, 35)

Turn in the Excusas packet from Sr. Wooly, get notes on this week's vocabulary on p. 36, start watching a double episode of American Family titled "La llorona" today, answering questions as we go. HW = get a parental signature on the upcoming movie "Bajo la misma luna."
29 octubre -- word of the day= girasoles (sunflowers). share good news, get our tests back and make corrections to them. Continue watching "La llorona"... HW = complete p. 39 and keep studying.
30 octubre -- word of the day = sentimientos (feelings), share good news, get p.39 credit and check it, watch more in "la llorona", check out the IMPERFECT tense on p.52. HW = p.52

Share good news, read the p.36 story together for comprehension, listen and follow along to the song "Yo te esperaré" by Cali y el Dandee, discuss Day of the Dead a little and watch a well-done 2.5 minute video which captures the essence of the holiday. Learn the irregular preterit form of "tener" and complete p. 38 for Monday.
4 noviembre: word of the day = efigie (likeness or effigy), share good news, credit for completeing p. 38, GET NEW WORKSHEET today using and explaining further the vocabulary on p. 36. COMPLETE THIS FOR TUESDAY and STUDY THE VOCAB FOR A QUIZ ON IT. Today we start the movie "Bajo la misma luna" and watch the first 30 minutes... we will have a quiz on it when we're done.
5 noviembre: word of the day= "acosar" = to stalk credit for p.36 vocab worksheet, correct it, take p.36 vocab quiz, correct p.38, watch the next 30 minutes or so of "Bajo la misma luna"
6 noviembre: word of the day = "octava maravilla" = eigth wonder. learn gestures for the p.41 vocabulary (c.1-5 Bolsa de golf), continue watching "Bajo la misma luna" -- HW = complete the worksheet that I gave you to accompany the p.41 vocab for Thursday.

7 noviembre -- finish Bajo la misma luna, correct the p.41 worksheet, get a new worksheet with 20 sentences to translate to English summarizing the movie.
8 noviembre -- head to computer lab to practice the preterit tense and the imperfect tense a bit with the site www.conjuguemos.com ; return to class and take our vocab quiz over p.41 vocabulary. HW -- make sure you have those 20 sentences well translated for Monday.
11 noviembre -- get lots o papers back, word of the day = "Cuadro que Pablo Picasso pintó" = painting that Pablo Picasso painted :), share good news, review vocab from p.41, correct the 20 sentences from the movie about Carlitos and his mom. HW = do p. 42 (translating the underlined phrases into English), p. 44, and exercises I and II on pp. 46-47 for Tuesday.
12 noviembre -- correct p. 42 and 44, learn gestures for p.51 vocabulary, watch the "me duele" video to practice the verb "doler," HW = p. 51 and p.57
