This year we will cover one semester of college-level Spanish, but at a high school pace. The course fee is $140 payable directly to University at Albany upon enrollment. Spanish 103 shares the same objectives as set forth by the NYS Regents Action Plan for Modern Languages. Students will achieve proficiency in the following areas: 1. Listening: Students will be able to understand standard speech delivered by a native speaker not used to dealing with foreigners although some complex utterances may hinder comprehension. 2. Speaking: Students will be able handle most communicative situations with confidence, but may need help with more complex situations. 3. Reading: Students will be able to understand most factual information on topics of special interest. Students will be able to analyze written material and detect the overall tone and intent of the text. 4. Writing: Students will compose unified and organized texts on everyday topics, showing good control of the morphology of the language, although errors may still occur. Students will be able to express complex ideas with simple language that would be comprehensible to a native speaker not used to reading the writing of foreigners. 5. Culture: Students will show an understanding and appreciation of a culture that is not their own.
