September 3, 2010 Dear Parents, After two weeks of school we are almost into our daily routine. This week we had music class, computers and art. The children are still learning that there is a lot of listening and following directions in first grade. There should not be lot talking and playing around. We have just changed seats, so I hope that will help some of the noise. I have tried to seat your child next to someone he/she can work with quietly. In our daily religion we have been talking about Old Testament people. Next week we will talk about Abraham. The story of Abraham is more evidence of how God keeps His promises to His people. Next week we will have one Bible verse. Friday, September 10 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5 Math- The children have been doing a good job in our math review. Some still need practice making the basic numbers correctly and neatly. These are the numbers that we are going to be using all year. They must be made correctly. Next week we will have our first test. It will cover many of the review things we have been doing these first two weeks. I return all tests in the Friday Folder. Reading- I have given your child our first reading storybook. The stories start out very easy, but we also talk about author, setting, type of literature, etc. There is something for all children (whatever their reading level) to learn. Each new story has more new vocabulary words. I call them POWER WORDS. Every week I will highlight the power words for you. Help your child learn these new words. The reading book (Trophies Book) can be taken home during the week if you want your child to read to you. However, IT MUST BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL EACH DAY. The first story is called, “The Hat”. The POWER WORDS are: up, down, got. I have also sent home a sheet of additional sentences for those children who need extra practice. Spelling- With our first story, we also have our first Spelling word list. Except for the, all the words contain the short vowel Aa. We will have a written test on these words on Thursday. This first test will be corrected, but it will not be graded. We will consider it a “practice test”. Our first spelling words are: at hat cat can cap tap map mad the a ********************************************************************* Be sure that your child brings their folder each day. Completed homework should be in the folder. You can take all other papers out of the folder. Unless it says HOMEWORK, we have finished it in school. Be sure to sign the back page of the Friday Folder. You can also write down church and Sunday school attendance each week. (Trinity’s Sunday school will not begin until September 12) Please continue to help your child tie their shoes. Our first field trip has been scheduled. We will be going to the Toledo Museum of Art on Friday, October 8. We will leave at 10:45 and return by 12:45. On that day all children will need to pack a lunch. Permission slips will be sent home later, but please consider being a driver. Thank you for all the toothbrushes. The collection will go through September, but we already have over 100! Remember, there is no school on Monday, September 6. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend! Any completed Bridges Books must be returned on Tuesday.
