The National Department of Education has established 6 Mandated Physical Education Standards which Blake Middle School uses to determine, develop, and refine curriculum. These standards describe what a physically educated student should know and be able to do. They emphasize meaningful content which includes the following:
• Instruction in a variety of motor skills designed to enhance child and adolescent development,
• Fitness education and assessment that allows for understanding and improvement of physical well-being,
• Development of cognitive concepts related to motor skills and fitness,
• Opportunities to improve social and cooperative skills, and
• Opportunities to increase the value placed on physical activity for health, enjoyment, self-expression and confidence.

We accomplish these standards and objectives by teaching a variety of individual and dual sports, team sports, rhythmical activities, as well as fitness and health related classes. In three years, students participate in the following activities:
• archery, badminton, deck tennis, golf, and Speedminton;
• basketball, cross country, games, field & scurry hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track & field, Ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball;
• cup stacking, juggling, jumping rope; line, square, salsa, and swing dancing;
• fitness testing, heart rate monitor training, Pilates, sliding, spinning, steps, strength and conditioning, and urban rebounding.

Physical Education Goals
• Learn skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities.
• Participate regularly in physical activities both in and out of school.
• Value physical activity and its contributions to a healthy lifestyle.

Guidelines for Successful Participation
• Arrive on time.
• Dress appropriately (T-shirt, shorts, sweats, and socks).
• Wear sneakers for safe play.
• Listen carefully.
• Respect yourself, others, the equipment, and the facilities.
Students requiring preventative and/or emergency medications (epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) must see the nurse before physical education class.

Grading criteria

• Demonstrates age appropriate skill development
• Participates with enthusiasm and effort in all activities
• Demonstrates desirable qualities of sportsmanship, conduct, and leadership
• Works cooperatively with others
• Demonstrates self-control
• Listens attentively and follows directions
• Uses class equipment appropriately

Grading is based on the level of skill, effort, participation, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
A=Outstanding/A strength/Exceeds expectations
P=Satisfactory/Consistent/Meets expectations
N= Needs improvement/Inconsistent/Seldom meets expectations
U= Unsatisfactory/Rarely meets expectations

Absences
• An excused absence requires a signed note from home. A Doctor’s note given to the nurse is requested for an extended absence.
• An unexcused absence or failure to dress for class will result in a detention.

**Excellent or good conduct and effort are needed in all related subjects to attain Academic Distinction or Recognition.

Thoughts to keep in mind:
You are responsible for yourself! Respect yourself and others at all times. Stretch properly and participate to the best of your ability. It is your life and health we are trying to improve.
